Lead Mountain Update 11

As predicted last week was very quiet with only a few bits of progress. I did manage to get the prone sniper based and ready to paint (thanks to the arrival of some cavalry bases) and the Evil Bear Wargames Panther turned up. I also got some Humbrol tan spray to make the job.

Based on the Kickstarter updates, I don’t think I will receive my Day of the Rangers Kickstarter before the end of the Lead Mountain Challenge. Due to this, I’m removing the models from the list.

Lead Mountain Update 10

After last week, I’ve slowed down a little bit in terms of painting. However, I have managed to add some more to pile thanks to Spectre’s upcoming releases.

slide1

They had already announced vehicles in the past with their kickstarter exclusive SUV and their Technical project. However, we now see the first two releases, a SUV and an offroad version. I’ve decided to pick up a few to make a convoy, perfect to be ambushed or protected. I also picked up their VIPs and close protection operatives – I love these characterful models and when I start running a campaign with them, I really want a good collection of VIPs to use. Finally, I also picked up some MENA militia guys so I have a more appropriate OPFOR for some upcoming games. On the same day, Evil Bear also announced he was releasing his new vehicle, a British Army Panther, at an exclusive launch discount and that’s how I now have a vehicle park to paint.

I also ordered some new bases and some basing material to make the figures look a little more interesting.

Potato quality picture

That’s not saying I haven’t painted anything. I have finished off my African soldiers and got the first hardsuit all painted up. Sadly just after I varnished them I noticed they have developed frosting so I will probably redo them a little. I was happy with them – they should be handy for playing African Union forces or generic African personal. The hard suits were great fun to paint and were something different from the rest.

Next week is going to be a slow one. Working late nights and then heading up north for family occasion on Thursday. Might get some painting done but not promising anything,

Lead Mountain Update 9

This week has been a pretty productive one. I’ve managed to finish off the insurgents, get my two VIPs finished and also tackled one of my personal stumbling blocks when it comes to painting.

2015-11-02 22.49.41

First up is the last 5 insurgents. Overall I’m quite happy with these guys – they look pretty sharp when placed on the tabletop. Just similar enough to make them look like a force but each one just slightly different. The forces with even less uniformity will be the two sets of militia forces I’ll be working on.

2015-11-06 00.27.58

Next we have the guys I’ve been dreading since Day 1 – the USMC Frogmen from Empress. My fear was mainly due to their clothing being primarily black, leading to them looking rather unfinished. However, painting certain details (such as goggles and guns) and using both an iraqi sand drybrush and the usual basalt grey means it doesn’t look quite so much like I just basecoated them and ran away. I don’t think I’ll use these guys quite as much as I should do but they are fantastic.

2015-11-06 22.54.19

I grabbed a few more models this week, primarily to try out the Eureka range and see how they scale compared to Empress/Spectre/Hasslefree. My first purchases was the USMC Force Recon pack, the matching anti-material sniper and his opposing number for the Taliban. I also need the last guy so I can run certain scenarios from the Skirmish Sangin book including the Sniper Hunt which looks particularly interesting. I am still looking for a way to base the sniper that matches the profile of the other bases but that requires finding a single cavalry sized base which might be pretty interesting.

2015-11-08 01.07.54

Seeing as it was a single model, I managed to finish the Sniper. The G3 was a joy to paint, and is unusual to paint one of these figures in boots. I also painted him with combat trousers, much like the commander model to show he is a cut above the rest.

2015-11-08 22.48.54

Finally, I got the two hostages painted up. Nice simple figures with a few little details to make them fit into the role.

Lead Mountain Update 8

So this week was a combination of buying more stuff and getting a ton more guys finished off to make up for the slow down of last week.

First up new stuff. I have, for a while, been looking at doing some wargaming in the South Atlantic. Something about the pictures of guys yomping through the Falklands, laden down with kit evokes a certain style. In addition, it seems an interesting battlefield to fight on. Finally, I was wanting to expand the number of manufacturers I know about and to see how they scale against the usual suspects. So I picked up two sets of Gripping Beast’s British figures. The weapons are a bit larger, the faces a little longer but its unlikely it will matter on the tabletop. Bought some paints to do early 80’s DPM and I should have them done soon. The West Shiresdale Fuislers are joining the Task Force heading to the Falklands.

2015-10-30 22.36.11

Next, I got some guys finished off. First up, GRU Operatives. I’m quite happy with these guys. I had to modify my stiple effect brush but I have improved my technic. The SURPAT gives the impression of the usual camo and is visually distinct from the Multicam guys. I also finished off the rest of the green armoured troopers from Empress. I think they are a nice set but not really interested in collecting more from the Project Gensis range; the models are a massive step down from their military sets. However, I now have a team ready in heavy armour for OSC. Finally I had a start on finishing my Insurgents. I’m painting them up to be a slightly higher quality than the African Milita I own (or the MENA milita units that tempt me so from the Spectre store). They are a bit more uniform, with green trousers or jackets all round. I’ll end up using them primarily for the selection of multinational mooks to protect captured VIPs, arms traders or undercover operatives. There are still 5 more guys to finish in that set.

2015-11-01 21.23.54

Also time for a time check. I have 92 days or ~13 weeks until my self imposed deadline. AS you can probably tell, the “BUY NO MORE MODELS” thing hasn’t happened. However, all that changes is how many models I have to paint. Either way, all my models will be painted by 0:01 on 01/02/2015. There are 117 figures left to paint (including a large vehicle) so that means I need to average around 9 models a week in order to get them all finished. Seems simple enough – I have a few clear weekends and Christmas should be have plenty of time.

Lead Mountain: Update 6

2015-10-18 23.00.07

So the Russians turned up. Four operators in modern gear with AKs (both full length and carbine), four low profile agents in civvies and one female agent (with a certain haircut that should be familiar to fans of a certain Captain America film) in a leather jacket. Overall, I’m a big fan of them. The low profile guys should be easy to paint while the female agent should be pretty fun (as long as I get the correct paint for the hair colour). However, the operators should be a little harder. I would really prefer to not paint them in more multicam (one man can only paint so much) so I’m looking at Russian SURPAT which may end up being more of a brown mess (as opposed to the green mess that is my attempt at ACU).

In addition to painting new stuff, I actually went back over my older models and drybrush black areas. This is for two reasons. A, the raw black areas look terrible. B, as time goes on I need to update the models to the latest standard of painting. Overall they all look better, the Brits especially gain due to the black helmet bands and large spaces on the L85. In the process I did notice places where the brits had lost some definition due to crap under coating job so I may potentiall need to strip a few and repaint. Maybe once the challenge is finished.

Finally, as you can see at the top, I’ve finished painting all my Taliban fighters. 17 guys, all painted, drybrushed, based and varnished. There is a lot of brown and black so I tried to mix it up with some lighter, more vibrant colours. The Radio DishDash guys are especially nice with a level of detail closer to the Empress sets than Spectre. From painting them, I’m very excited about the upcoming Kickstarter models. Its also nice to finally finish painting a complete set of proper OPFOR. Mercs are all well and good but sometimes you need to paint what’s on the evening news.

Lead Mountain: Update 5

A very productive week. I got two sets of operators painted and finished but more importantly all but one of my figures is properly based up on sand and painted tan. This means that I can put the PVA glue and sand away for a while and focus on the painting.

As for what got finished, we have passed the 100 models done mark. I’m not 100% happy with them so I might go back at some point to make a few minor tweaks. My attempt at UCP on the Empress figures looks okay but a little bit too light.

Lead Mountain: Update 4

slide2

I did it again. I bought some more models. The new Spectre Russians just look too perfect and I need some Russians for a campaign I’m planning. So I picked up 5 covert GRU Operatives (also good for Russian gangsters or arms dealers) and 4 Direct Action GRU with a combination of AKs and AKSUs.

2015-10-04 23.30.58

On the other hand I did good and got some Taliban painted, based and all ready for wargaming tomorrow. There is a lot of brown in painting them so I tried to add a few coloured details to match with the pictures. They will get their first game going up against my friend’s Bundeswehr which should prove interesting.

I also finally chose which models I will be receiving from the Day of the Rangers kickstarter. Rather than my original plan of all the US characters, I decided to get a nice mixture of models. Two Delta teams, three sets of Rangers (two normal and a command team will let me give a squad leader to Ranger chalk and some other figures to make Air Force personnel) and two sets of Somali gunmen means I can get out and play some of the scenarios in the book. I also picked up two sets of counters for Skirmish Sangin to make playing the game a little easier.
