Structures are a key part of modern warfighting, with specialist equipment and training often required to handle them correctly. While previous eras often avoided structures, the modern-day fight must be ready to fight around, through, under and over them. They also have the slight problem of being rather large, both in terms of footprint and potentially elevation, leading to them filling up the terrain storage boxes with a collection of variously shaped boxes often left empty.

What happens when you have too many physical structures

However, buildings have been changing on the tabletop. When I first started wargaming, most rulesets simply treated buildings as either impenetrable obstacles or simple boxes that units disappeared into (often being stored off board on a handy piece of paper with a hastily drawn box around them). Most structures you could buy were shells, giving you the impression of a building rather than all the details. However, more recent rulesets have started treating structures differently, modelling specific aspects (such as entry points and firing points in Chain of Command) with more detail. Some rulesets (such as the blog favourite BPRE28MM) are based almost entirely on room clearing and the tactical challenges they include, really forcing you to think about every door and window as you advance on the objective.

In other words, we need buildings with floor plans.

As you add interiors, however, you add a whole host of other problems. Structures become more complex and made up of more individual parts, while the buildings themselves are harder to store due to complicated internal structures. A higher level of design is needed. Multi-level buildings also become interesting (especially if you start having skirmishes across multiple floors and need access to multiple ones at the same time). With full 3D models, you also start to run into serious bulk issues, where even a skirmish-sized 4′ x 4′ board of detailed structures can fill a standard 50l Really Useful Box as shown above.

Examples of 3D structures – Urban Scatter Gaming MENA House 1 and Building 8 from BPRE28mm’s Phaseline expansion

We have seen some designers (such as Urban Scatter Gaming) who have done a good job of designing setups that make logical sense yet remain playable. On the other end, BPRE28MM‘s structures and HAYWIRE MODERN‘s printable tiles both focus on playability by going with flats. The BPRE templates included in the starter boxes are especially good, made of a hard-wearing, rigid material with a design that makes it easy to read the different doors, windows, and walls at a glance, and can be raised on corner pieces for the multi-level buildings added in Phaseline.

With that scene setting in place, let’s talk about something new on the marketplace.

In September last year, Steffan from Flank March Miniatures sent me a message talking about an idea he’d had for 2D terrain pieces and asking for some feedback and thoughts (something that puzzled me greatly, as usually people get annoyed with my feedback). In the months since then, I’ve had a steady stream of updates as the project evolved from test designs and sketches up to the products currently available. Now that they are out, and I have the first set in my hand, I can take a look at them and see what you can get.

Disclosure time: this pack was sent to me by Flank March Miniatures to initially provide pre-release feedback. No money changed hands, and there was no requirement to write a public post afterwards. Flank March Miniatures has had no editorial control over this post.

The final release is a little bit of a dream team – Flank March Miniatures creating, designing and running the project, Joe Bilton (of Heroic Maps and awesome gaming tables) doing the final artwork, Deep Cut Studios (makers of gaming mats and other things printed on mouse pads) making the products, and Full Metal Miniatures as the seller. The first set, entitled “2d CQB Building Pack“, includes four small structures (roughly 150mm x 160mm), with generic layouts for small family homes. I know Flank March’s current focus for games is all things West Germany in the Cold War, but the layouts and details aren’t especially focused on any particular region (although I’m sure any architects in the audience will be able to explain how the stair location or room sizes tell you where the buildings are designed for).

In terms of playability, each structure has a mixture of doors and windows on the outside, with a selection of internal walls and doorways inside. Each building also includes a staircase to head to an upstairs level, although there is no floor plan for the level above. I think these buildings have a good balance between visual aesthetics and playability – windows and doors are easily distinguished from each other, walls stand out, but there is still plenty of visual touches such as shadows and detritus on the floor. They have a war-torn aesthetic, with a few touches of colour from various rugs and different flooring materials to prevent them from just being grey. I have noticed on my tiles there seem to be some uneven edges (you can see below some black border lines around the edge of the walls), which may or may not be in the final version.

Size-wise, figures on GW spec 28mm bases fit easily inside, filling the stairs but only partially fitting through most doorways (time for all the 20mm base folk to be a little smug). Well, I think they are great for playability and storage. As someone who has watched rulesets become more and more focused on fighting inside structures while also having to increasingly drag my terrain around to various places (the weeks when I ran games at Edinburgh were the few times I actually took the car in that driving nightmare of a city). Having the ability to pack an entire town’s worth of layouts into a small box is a great way to be able to take your games anywhere or keep them from overwhelming your storage space at home (as sadly not all of us have a storage container or industrial unit to fill – a man can dream). In fact, you could probably fit a board’s worth of structures into the small 9L Really Useful Boxes I carry my troops in and still have space for all the non-flat elements (trees, walls and more).

Marketing material from Flank March Miniatures

Speaking of packing entire towns away, I feel like flats can also potentially open up the ability to play some types of urban terrain that might be impractical to play without a serious collection of 3D terrain. Dense towns and urban areas, and especially house estates, become a lot more palatable when you’re not trying to find space 30+ slightly tweaked 3D houses and their interiors in boxes. It also opens up the ability for players who don’t really have much space for scenery to really get into wargaming through complex urban spaces, and not just limited to the same 4 buildings – something great for wargamers in university dorms or playing across the kitchen table, or even playing games at lunchtime at work.

I also really like the quality of them – I’ve been a fan of Deep Cut Studio’s various products since I first bought them in 2020 when I moved away from a regular wargames group and needed my own mat. Since then, I’ve picked up roadways, area tree bases (both of which can be seen in this article), and multiple custom mats for BPRE28, and all of them have lasted incredibly well – I have no worries that they survive the grind of the tabletop. The design on the surfaces has also been very well done: a good mixture of scene-setting details and theme-evocative elements, while also making everything very clear at a glance.

On the other hand, flats are not perfect. While they are advantageous for gaming, they lack a certain something visually. One part of wargaming I particularly love is the visual side, the moment of looking at a board and seeing it as a small battlefield shrunk down to 28mm. Buildings may be large and bulky, but they do really help to set the scene (even if it’s the smaller touches on the ground that make a board truly great). The difference between seeing your models swarm over a section of templates or seeing them hidden amongst various buildings is quite stark, and for those who prefer the aesthetics, the templates don’t really hit the spot.

And speaking of multiple levels, these pieces may have staircases on them, but there is no matching upper floor. Additionally, due to the mousepad material, you can’t simply add an additional floor above and prop it up at the edges (as you can with the rigid templates from BPRE28). It’s easy to hand-wave this away that, in most cases, the fighting usually only takes place on a single floor (especially on the smaller structures being shown here) but once you start hitting larger buildings or more vertical designs, then you’re limiting a building to only its footprint – you’re having to either hand-wave the upper floors and their strategic advantage or decamp them just off the board to another piece of paper which can break the flow. Now, this isn’t an impossible situation – it’s very possible to design a girder situation to hold the flats up, but it is a limitation to be aware of.

Overall, I think this is a promising start to a range of scenery. It isn’t designed for everyone (especially if you especially value the visuals of your 3D figures in 3D environments), but it can definitely provide a great way to bring interesting tactical scenarios to the tabletop without investing in a storage shed. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the range evolves from here – more variants of structures this size, larger layouts for things such as offices or commercial buildings. I’m looking forward to seeing how this initial release sells and how it goes from here (and especially how many appear in the various wargaming reports we see moving forward).

I also feel like these structures could actually be an interesting starting point for a project to bring together maximum playability of the flats with 3D printed structures on top. Shell structures, similar to the old 3 walls and roof we used to see, would work very nicely sitting over the top of the mouspad base pieces, letting you present the full visual experience of the perfect tiny model village before taking the shells away to reveal the building interiors (while also potentially allowing for some interesting gameplay dynamics. This might be a project for Flank March, but it’s potentially more likely that the 3D printing community might fill the gap.

If you want a set of these for yourself, you can find them over at Full Metal Miniatures right now for £20 per pack.

In every wargamer’s collection of terrain, buildings hold a special (and in many cases oversized) place.
