The News Stand: 22/10/2023

|

It’s Sunday again so time for another News Stand. This week is a right old mix, from new factions in BPRE to previews of the upcoming Patreon releases to some Combat Octopus bits ready for your printer today. Oh, and a friend of mine is doing some stuff so legally I have to share his work as it looks pretty awesome (also it stops him from pulling university pictures of me from his blackmail folder.)

As always, thanks to the News Fans and other patrons over on the ChargeBlog patreon for buying my time to make this wrap-up each week. If you like these roundups and find them useful, why not chip in on the Patreon?

No news on Gunslinger this week – we’re all taking some time off between the releases to focus on other things (like sleep). But come back next week when the Deep Dive goes up!

Black Powder Red Earth Reveals More Factions For Spearhead

Last week we saw Black Powder Red Earth (BPRE) reveal the SPEAR Team figures. This week we got to see the other faction coming with the Spearhead expansion, 00 Unit Nitto (a unit working for the Awbari government). More details on these guys will be coming soon but even from looking at the gear, you can see they are similar to Cold Harbor – rocking slightly older gear such as the MICH helmet and different plate carrier, you can tell they aren’t quite as well funded as the contractors we know and love (and get vaporised in BPRE 28mm). That said, these guys aren’t low-tech in any way – the IR unit in front of the red dot (as well as the rifle design) should give you a hint about how ready for combat these guys are.

Stand by for more info on them, as well as some of the extra features coming in Spearhead.

Spectre Show Off Beta Rules Preview

It’s been a week or two since the Spectre Operations V3 pre-order window closed and I know a few people have been waiting on the beta PDF with a certain level of excitement. Luckily, Spectre released 4 pages as a WIP preview all ready for the eager public to take a look at. With pages covering campaign rules, fighter profiles, assembling your element for a Tier 1 force and a selection of weapon stats.

One thing you can see from these pages is that there is A LOT going on in this game, with an equipment list full of items that made Call of Duty Advanced Warfare look old hat. I have some concerns after taking a look through these pages but I’m going to hold them back until I get a chance to sit down, read through the whole book and get some figures on the tabletop to get a feel for it. No exact release date yet but hopefully it should be relatively soon.

“Le Coup” from Miska Miniatures Unleashes the Gendarmerie

The latest Miska Miniatures Kickstater “Le Coup” has been storming ahead, with 12 main stretch goals (including the Gendarmerie pictured above) unlocked and added to the rewards for those that have pledged so far. The other two additional goals (French reaction and social) have seen some movement as well, and there is still another 21 days of the Kickstarter left to go!

Combat Octopus Releases The VIP

Backers of Combat Octopus this week received the complete VIP and bodyguard release. Bringing with it a massive number of weapon options and modular bodies, this set is ideal for building up your own team of men in black escorting a rather hyper-looking VIP with the most dangerous weapon – a bank card.

From talking on the Ultramodern Discord, the next release will expand this set with more Mid-combat poses, perfect for when the gloves come off and the action begins. I’m definitely looking forward to adding to the Bazi Interior Security forces, giving the princes some close protection.

Modern Miniatures Previews The Military FOB Release

Modern Miniatures has been showing off some of the parts coming in next month’s Patreon release. As well as the cargo train you may have seen before, the release also includes elements to build a Military FOB. Faris has been hard at work building and painting the pieces, such as the Hesco walls and even a tower. I’m definitely interested in seeing more about what this kit includes, as it might help save some time when building my own kits.

Urban Scatter Gaming Prepares Some Military Infrastructure

Urban Scatter Gaming has been using the Ultramodern Discord to show off the next release he’s working on – a set of items to assemble a temporary base for your scenary. If you’ve played ArmA the building above probably gave you flashbacks but this portable cabin and command equipment should let you set up all kinds of structures for your wargaming.

There are a few other items also on the way, such as this Satalite dish and military trailer, as well as a mobile generator to mount to the trailer. Knowing the designer, we probably have a few more pieces on the way, so keep your eyes open for the final release.

The Lazy Forger Teases Me With More Lovely Models

It’s a hard thing to complain about but The Lazy Forger does like to occasionally drop me a photo dump of all the latest things he’s been working on. This week, it was actually getting some of the terminal items shown in renders last week actually printed on a Mini 8k printer. As you can see, he’s nailed the detail work on them and, having worked with his designs in the past, those railings are actually not too terrifying to remove from the supports. They are however perfect to get on the tabletop, giving you even more items for your 6mm skirmishes (be they modern, sci-fi or somewhere in between).

If you want to keep an eye on what he’s up to with these tiny 6mm terrain pieces, then Lazy Forger has just set up a newsletter, letting you guarantee you get the info regardless of whatever algorithm gets in the way. You can find it over on the website at https://fsd-wargame.com/subscribe/

And finally, time to help out a buddy. My former housemate/Dreadquill Publishing Man is involved with Wargame-Model-Bases in Middlesbrough who have just released some custom hard-wearing resin bases. The first release is very sci-fi inspired (ideal for Kill-team or similar) but if they do well, we may see other bases perhaps more suited to our battlefields (or at the very least something closer than space temples). If you’re interested in giving the bases a try, you can find them at their ebay store.

If you want to support my work on gathering the news together, my Patreon is the best way to keep things going. With a minimal cost of £1 a month, every little helps to keep the news spigot flowing and to let me cover more of the suppliers out there.

Of course, if you are a REAL news fan, there is a brand new tier called, shockingly, News Fan. For £5 a month (or £1.25ish a news post), you can guarantee you’ll get your weekly dose of news updates.

If you think the news is only okay but would like to see me actually do some hobbying, then you can join the Board of Shadowy Figures for £7.50. This group will, before the start of every month, vote from a selection of mini-projects I have in the pipe and tell me which one to work on this month. I’ll then do my best to work on it and by the end of the month report back with my success or failure in a little post. If that sounds exciting, it’s available for you!
