Brand new week, brand new set of Ultramodern news! As we enter September, it’s time for Patreon release week where the monthly subscriptions provide all the goodies you pay for. Stand by for a whole host of previews of all the new and exciting things!
Gunslinger
No significant updates from Gunslinger HQ this week – Flytrap Digital has been busy getting the releases for Warpod, Netherworlds Edge and Caveman Vs Wild ready for patrons and I’ve been getting the details all finished off for what Gunslinger patrons will be getting on the 15th. We’ve also been looking ahead for the next big range, with the basic details mostly sorted and the pack’s contents laid out and gear chosen.
We also have some big news about both the ala carte releases and Print on Demand for Gunslinger coming soon. There have been some behind-the-scenes tweaks going on to make the end result better for the consumer, hence the delay in getting the files uploaded to My Mini Factory and given to potential Print On Demand partners. Once Black Sector is finished after this month, we’re going to have the process ironed out and all ready for prime time.
What’s also interesting to see certain manufacturers have been keeping an eye on Gunslinger and we’ve already seen some reactions. It seems the peg in the foot system that we decided to use in the Gunslinger figures has been picked up by other people, with at least two other manufacturers opting to include it in future releases announced this week, allowing for greater stability while keeping dynamic poses (and the added bonus of supporting the small but vocal clear base using minority). Gunslinger’s aim has always been to help push the market forward so this change is welcoming to see after only two releases.
Right, let’s look at the news.
Spectre Answers Questions and Previews More Task Force Operators
First up, we have Spectre Miniatures. As you can see above, we’ve been given another preview of a few upcoming ranges. The two on the right are Task Force Operators armed with the new XM7 rifle (a weapon we already saw previewed on Instagram a few months ago) as well as some variety in the gear (torn sleeves for all those action heroes). The figure on the left is interesting – with the rifle, helmet and gear (such as those kneepads), it’s clear Spectre will soon be releasing some Ultramodern Russians in the Ratnik gear.
Speaking of Russians, last week after we went to press with our early edition, the Spectre Discord also showed off this big chunk of Resin. This is a BTR 80 variant with the HMG in the turret (so I’m guessing the BTR-82V), ideal for transporting around your squad of Russians (probably sat on the roof). It’s also quite a nice print, so you can see Spectre are absolutely hammering their 8K printers. It will be interesting to see how these are offered but it should be a good counterpart to their already existing BTR-82A released back in 2019 (and maybe about to return if Spectre are releasing more Russians).
This week, Spectre also hit Instagram stories for Question Time about the next version of their ruleset, as well as what their plans are going forward. Aside from the distressing number of people who don’t know what a D10 is, we also got a few other interesting tidbits I’ve included in the gallery above (please ignore the low battery level). Big things from the question session:
- The new ruleset will include a campaign system.
- The new ruleset is an I-Go-U-Go system, but Elements can react
- New releases coming soon include Task Force range (coming very soon), Russians (coming soon after), UKSF (currently being worked on and including UK Police CTFO).
- The Agents QRF will soon be available in resin.
- There is a move to offer figures either as prints or in resin, as resin is currently the “best” material for what Spectre is providing.
Wargames Atlantic Release Modular Ultramodern Ukrainians
Over on My Mini Factory, Atlantic Digital has released a male counterpart to their Ukrainian females released earlier in the year. This pack gives you three heads, four bodies (available with or without puddle bases) and a rather electric mix of weapons mated to their arms, ranging from the usual AK to things like the CZ Scorpion, an AR and even a pump action shotgun. Thanks to my Unnamed Researcher over at Desk-Ops, it looks like the two sets are cross-compatible (if you don’t mind a few little tweaks with the different body widths), giving you a pretty sizable pack of pieces to build up a squad of Ukrainian fighters.
Anvil Digital Forge Enters The Zone With Latest Release
Anvil Digital Forge also has an exciting release this month that will have you all shouting Blyatt and strumming the guitar around the campfire. That’s right, Anvil is releasing all the bits you’d need to send in some Stalkers to the zone.
With a set of eight gorka suit-wearing bodies (complete with Smersh rigs and matching arms), ten heads, VAL and VSS weapons to add to the Regiments system and a whole pile of extra accessories and weapon parts, it’s an ideal one-stop shop to get your Zona Alfa band up and running. But you also get a set of parts ideal for building some Snorks (the gas mask-wearing zombies above), both good and bad boys in the form of various dogs and (my personal highlight) a sitting body which can be printed with guitar to help set the scene. If you’re into modular parts for moderns and like Anvil’s slightly more heroic look, this set would be great to add to your collection.
Black Powder Red Earth Shows Off Spearhead Preview from Nova And Prepares Latest Issue for Release
Black Powder Red Earth was at this week’s Nova Open, running a preview of the brand new Spearhead campaign system. For anyone who couldn’t make it, the handouts that were provided at the event are now up on the Patreon, giving you a first glimpse at what is coming in the next expansion pack. And even better, they are available for the general public meaning anyone can take a look!
I don’t technically cover the graphic novel but they released the full version of the latest Awbari book (volume V) this weekend as well to Patreon. Physical copies of the book will be coming in the next few weeks but oh boy. We have reached the turning point. Some of the toys from the tabletop game have shown themselves and this war thriller series is about to go full War with a capital W.
Combat Octopus Releases Part 2 of the Private Military Contractors Range
He burnt the midnight oil, but Combat Octopus managed to hit the first of the month with this latest release, giving all his patrons who have paid for the month of September Part 2 of the Private Military Contractors theme. Expanding on the August release, this pack gives you a machine gunner, an operator who has swapped to his secondary and two female contractors. All these bodies have two arm variations, giving you a choice in weapons (including a Pecheneg for the machine gunner) as well as the modular nature letting you mix and match. In fact, thanks to the separate pouches, you can definitely find a lot of other CO packs to mix with this one, taking advantage of the steadily growing pool of releases to go all out on building your own force.
The theme for October/November is still being voted on by the patrons in this post. At the moment, the options are Russian and US tank crews or suit-wearing VIPs and bodyguards. The VIPs are currently winning but, if you are a patron and want to get your vote in, the poll is still active as I go to press.
Turnbase Miniatures Shows Off Releases For August Patrons
Right at the end of the month, Turnbase Miniatures showed off their latest release for everyone who paid in August. Due to some scheduling issues, the release was changed at the last moment to this GIGN release as you can see above, giving you a selection of operators with the visor helmets and custom stocks to support them. These are some nicely detailed figures, ideal for some close-quarters fights.
Tier 3 also added a Sherpa APC that should be coming soon. These figures have been sent out to the August backers, with the releases for September not yet announced.
Black Hills Games Previews South American Rebels
The August release for Black Hills Games has been delayed but we do have this wonderful little preview of a South American rebel ready for the fight. It’s a really cool look, with web gear including the L-shaped torch and AKS being distinctive enough but the USA hat takes the biscuit (or cookie). This release is going to have seven figures, five soldiers with AKs and FALs, one commander and a sniper with SVD.
From conversations on the Ultramodern discord, the next release after these rebels will be Cartel fighters. Definitely worth keeping an eye on this Patreon.
Modern Miniatures Releases It’s Jungle Airport
Modern Miniatures has released this month’s pack, bang on the 1st of September. As previewed last week, this pack includes everything you need for your secret jungle airport – from the trees on the outside to the control tower and planes, it’s all here. Sign up now and you’ll get it sent across, as well as the files appearing on My Mini Factory at the end of the month.
Next month’s release is still being voted on but it looks like it will be a trailer park drug lab. Time to cook Jessie.
TT Immersion is Back With A Bunker
Moving onto the Gumroads, TT Immersion has returned with a rather cool-looking Bunker entrance set. This kit comprises a bunker interior for filament printing, a Bunker front (in both damaged and undamaged versions) and separate doors which, if you add a 1mm rod, can be setup to swing open. I’m already thinking up things to do with this set and as you can see above it looks awesome all painted up.
If you haven’t bought from TT Immersion before, there are a wide range of products available on his Gumroad. From RWS systems, market accessories, Raven drones, space radars and more (including a toilet roll in a safe, best not to ask), he has been churning out some really well-designed pieces. He’s also active on the Ultramodern Wargaming Group Discord, so why not pop over and say hello! He may even drop a completely free model, such as a solar panel.
Urban Scatter Gaming Releases Metal Fences For Your Tabletop
Urban Scatter Gaming, as used by Spectre on their fantastic boards, has a brand new release out. Metal fences, in a selection of styles, are perfect to add some more barriers to your urban board, as well as more channels with the included doors and frames. There is even a little keypad depending on how secure you want them. As always, Urban Scatter’s releases are an excellent price and excellent quality and I’m looking forward to getting these guys printed for my own purposes.
The Solo Wargamer Shows Off A Game of Haywire
Finally, The Solo Wargamer continues his videos covering Haywire, his upcoming game release. The final video in his introduction playlist is this new release, covering the setup for a game and how to play it in solo. Of course, it’s also a chance to show off his amazing gaming boards and figures, while getting you excited for what’s coming soon. Haywire is coming soon, and I’m excited to get my hands on it.
If you want to support my work on gathering the news together, my Patreon is the best way to keep things going. With a minimal cost of £1 a month, every little helps to keep the news spigot flowing and to let me cover more of the suppliers out there.
Of course, if you are a REAL news fan, there is a brand new tier called, shockingly, News Fan. For £5 a month (or £1.25ish a news post), you can guarantee you’ll get your weekly dose of news updates.
If you think the news is only okay but would like to see me actually do some hobbying, then you can join the Board of Shadowy Figures for £7.50. This group will, before the start of every month, vote from a selection of mini-projects I have in the pipe and tell me which one to work on this month. I’ll then do my best to work on it and by the end of the month report back with my success or failure in a little post. If that sounds exciting, it’s available for you!
