We’re into a new month and we’re one step closer to the Old World game day I’ll be playing in September. That means for the next few weeks you’re going to be seeing me frantically painting up a few more heavily armoured Chaos boys and girls.
This week’s big thing was getting the rest of the 30-man block of Chaos Warriors assembled. Pulling from three different eras of plastic kit, the warriors are going to be the central block of my force – rolling forward up the board slowly, losing a few pieces along the way before meeting an enemy unit and grinding them down. The Warriors are reasonable to rank up (not always guaranteed when using Age of Sigmar figures) but once together they look awesome – the design language of “Big armoured figure with spikes and furs” is eternal after all. The next step is getting the new warriors painted before basing the entire group. You can see above I actually have a few other figures that I’ve moved over to square bases, either letting me expand the warrior block even further or add a few champions to carry nasty surprises.
Not pictured but I also finished off assembling the Marauder horsemen from the Darkoath box I bought a few months back. Luckily for me, this set was pretty quick to assemble (with some very interesting assemblies with to get everything on the spure) but more importantly they rank up perfectly, despite being designed for the more skirmishy Age of Sigmar. This is in complete contrast to the Chaos Knights who I’m still assembling and are an actual Bastard to get next to each other on the correct base sizes. More news about them next week when I get past the screaming stage.
As part of getting ready for the Old World, I also decided it was time to pick up a few books. Up until this point I’ve been playing using a few websites such as New Recruit and Warhammer: The Old World Online Rules Index. However, when playing games as a group, it’s always much more useful to have the physical books to hand as it’s usually quicker to flick through despite PDF searching and such. Plus, I’ve got to admit, the Old World books are LOVELY – they have a real early 2000s vibe, being packed of colour images alongside the artwork. The sheer chunk of the rulebook that is just the background reminds me of summer holidays spent sat in holiday cottages reading the rules for Warhammer 40k and Lords of the Rings and planning games. Reading them in the sunshine on Yorkshire Day at the pub was maybe slightly different but still a great bit of excitement
Of course, I only technically needed the core rulebook and the Ravening Hordes… unless of course, I was already thinking about the next force I was going to do with the pile of Highland Models I have.
The end result of all this Old World preparation was actually getting some figures on the table. Unfortunately, my guys were still unpainted but the Dastardly Regular Opponent managed to storm his way through the Dwarves I had printed for him and all of his 1000-point force hit the table painted. I’m actually writing a little SITREP on this battle over the next week, but what I can say is I had a great time – the Old World rulebook is large but in reality, you only need a few pages (and occasionally go hunting for a specific edge case). It was a nail-biter from the start through to the finish and both of us are excited for the next game.
However it wasn’t all Fantasy gaming. I’ve also continued work on “The Zanvult Incursion” and as part of it I’ve bene thinking about the forces involved. I’ve also been using it as an excuse to break out the 3D printing box and play around with some of the vehicles I’ve bought from Bobmack3d. I do like the Box on Tracks design of the 1960s APCs and while the M113 is the classic, the FV432 is a little closer to my heart. I’ve begun printing off a few of them to play around with them, as well as potentially matching them up with the Scorpion and Scimitar I printed off a long time ago. This FV432 above has the Peak Engineering turret on it, giving it an armoured GPMG mounting.
There was also a blog post released earlier this week covering some digital kitbashing of Combat Octopus‘s releases. This was a fun blog post to write, and well worth a read, but also I really need to actually finish painting all those operators at some point.
That’s it for this week, with a new update coming next Sunday.
