The Week In ChargeBlog: 15/09/2024

|

After last week’s cleaning, this week I actually got some more hobby stuff done.

I’ve been learning to make bread with the breadmaker my mum and dad passed onto me after replacing their own.

But you’re not here to hear about that, you’re here to hear about the painting I got done in preparation for my day of Old Worlding with the Regular Opponents and old friends. So let’s jump in and talk about that!

Before that though, a quick post.

The MDF sales are still up – I’m going to do a larger push to try and get more of these things sold so drop me a message if interested.

Painting was a mixed bag. Starting with the negatives, I wasn’t able to get my army finished. In fact, the cavalry units didn’t get any colours on top of the black/white undercoat combination. However, on the plus side, I managed to get all of my foot units with the vast majority of paints (or at least the main colours of black metal, purple clothes, metal and leather) and even finished the first 10 marauders (apart from basing). I even managed to get some paint on my Demon Prince (made from the Sigvald the Magnificent figure) which is a bit of pushing through a mental barrier and touching a centrepiece model I’ve had since 2021. As much as I love the Chaos figures, they are definitely pigs to paint up with lots of little trim pieces that require a careful eye and a long evening.

It’s been a while since I sat down and painted a lot so it felt like attempting to get back in the groove of something I used to do regularly. Back in the glory days of this blog (2017 to 2018), I was painting a large number of figures each week (in part due to working on stuff at work) which made me feel less guilty when buying a load more. When I slowed down in 2019 (due to a variety of reasons), I still kept buying and suddenly had the lead pile I’m about to sell. 2021 also worked well for painting but that was a little bit of a blip due to the whole COVID/WFH thing. I doubt I’ll ever return to the height of these two periods but I should return to painting frequently – I enjoy it and it lets me get figures on the board and ready to game.

Thoughts aside, here was my army as I went into the games day. The centre point of my force was a block of 27 Chaos Warriors led by an Exalted Champion, designed to act as an anvil while chopping its way forward with the EC’s Demon Sword. The hammer for this anvil are the Chosen units – a set of 10 Warriors with Great Weapons and 5 Chosen Chaos Knights. Both act to destroy whatever they touch (which quite often ends up being the enemy’s skirmish screen) with enough stopping power and staying power to mince anything they touch. To screen these units, I have 10 marauders (with shield and armour to make sure they don’t immediately disappear) and 5 marauder horsemen as the disposable assets while my flying Demon Prince flies into the enemy backline to engage the enemy’s war machines or tie down anything speedy.

Saturday was game day. The original plan was a gaming weekend but as we got closer and closer (and as people were unable to make the Sunday) we decided to bow to our advancing age (and lack of desire to sleep in the venue we were borrowing) and turned it into a single day’s gaming. I may do a quick post this week for some more Combat Geometry thoughts but overall it was a good day. Old World has grabbed our group in a way that I don’t think anything else has so the day was full of good play, experienced players teaching the newer ones and plenty of list crafting afterwards. It was a nice chance to just get together and hang out, something that becomes increasingly hard as people spread out.

This event was also a little test for what I plan to run next year. Having access to a venue like the hut we borrowed (thanks to the Dastardly Regular Opponent) makes it much more possible to run one-day events – themed game days or a chance to run a big game are things that everyone seems to enjoy. I’m going to challenge myself to try and organise things so stand by for hopefully lots of exciting games next year.

However, it wasn’t all Fantasy – this week also had the FDM printer hammering away on Necromunda terrain. The Dragon’s Rest kit continues to be exciting to play around with, especially after looking at the walkways and more decorative pieces. However, the main focus for the moment was reprinting the base tiles to give a reasonable-sized Necromunda board, before giving them a quick spray down with Colour Forge metallic spray. I also printed out the ruined walls and corners to be assembled, before also doing a test plate of walkways and stairs. The tests were mostly successful so now I’m getting more walkways ready for a game this week against The Former Housemate. That and assembling a few Spyrers…

Alas, not everything I printed came out successfully. A late-stage print failure on an overfilled plate meant I had to halt the printing of a set of walls and corners when they were only mostly done. This is annoying but I’m not throwing them in the bin just yet. Luckily, the print failed AFTER the two slots used to click these items together. This means I can still assemble them into walls, they just can be used for either walkways or have things placed on top. My plan is to cover them in filler, add some rubble and make them look partially damaged, as you might expect from the underhive.

That’s it for this week, with a new update coming next Sunday.
