The Week In ChargeBlog: 10/11/2024

|

As you might have guessed, last week was a no-update week as I was too busy writing, working and recovering from working. This week was going to be mostly the same again, however, I managed to sneak just a little bit of hobbying in right at the end. More importantly, I’m getting more focused on a return to Ultramodern full-time, getting new pieces printed out and planning out some gaming. I’ll cover more once I get it all ready to show off but for now, let’s see what’s going on.

Oh hey, I know someone on this list. But also a great use of a BlueSky feature!

First up, you may have noticed Twitter going to the dogs, especially after this week’s events. I announced last weekly update that I was moving across full time and I’ve now been joined by pretty much all the hobby accounts I’ve been following. One of the great advantages of BlueSky is the system known as “Starter Packs” and Wargaming Superstar Henry Hyde has constructed a Historical miniatures-focused one, filled to the brim with people like Sonic Sledgehammer, Storm of Steel and more (including me!). If you’re looking to make the leap over, this is a great starting point to fill out your feed and take advantage of the much healthier vibe that the new place has, as well as a shift away from an algorithm that punishes you for posting links in favour of a much more controllable system.

More excitedly, this week saw the launch of Combat Octopus’s Gothic Serpent campaign bringing you 16 figures for US Rangers and Somali Militia. As someone who is very keen on both Combat Octopus’s work and the film Black Hawk Down, this is a campaign built for me. I’m going to be writing a bit of an intro to the release next week (as I want to get the news out and there is plenty to be excited about) but I did also manage to get a few test figures out using the pre-assembled figures along with some alternative heads. I’m already liking the vibes on these guys, with the 1990s-era gear (including those fancy handle-mounted optics) providing that real contractor feel. These will be great fun to paint up and I’m really excited to see the other releases coming in the campaign, such as machine gunners and Delta Assaulters.

Finally, a set of Old Friends. As part of my push to get back to Ultramodern Wargaming, finishing off my BPRE28 figures is top of my list. There are several reasons – filling out the pieces needed to play BPRE28, the full collection is perfect for other games as well thanks to the mix of weapon systems (enough for variety without being unable to create useful combinations of elements) but most importantly they are some lovely figures to paint up and get on the table. I had only managed to assemble part of the SPEAR Brigade set, with four more assaulters in baggies in one of my storage drawers waiting to be put together. Well, over an evening of watching early-2000s movies, I finally glued the last set together and put them alongside their fellows. Now I just have to build the NITTO set, and everything will be ready for the brush, the basing material and then, the battlefield.

That’s it for this week, with a new update coming next Sunday.
