The News Stand: 22/08/2026

|

After a delay due to work and after peeling myself away from two separate modern-day shooter game betas (one very easily, the other one I’ll be running back to once I finish writing this), it’s time for a double-week edition of The News Stand!

As always, thanks to the members of the Special Projects and Logistics Group, News Fans and all the other patrons over on the ChargeBlog patreon – they buy my time to make this wrap-up each week, letting me take the time to gather all the news, check the details on them and prepare them in one single place. If you like these roundups and find them useful, why not chip in on Patreon and help to keep them going?

If you’re looking for greater insight into the Ultramodern Wargaming space than the SPOTREP series of articles is a great place to jump in. Available to Patrons of the ChargeBlog Patreon, the quarterly update linked above provides plenty of detail on the current state of the market, as well as the current thoughts on the various companies and rulesets in the space.

It’s that time again – MyMiniFactory is running its Summer sale, lasting until September 14th. The code this year is “SUMMER26” and as always, there are plenty of Ultramodern companies included in the sale. Anvil Digital Forge, Combat Octopus, Modern Miniatures, Turnbase Miniatures and WarDaddy Studios all have money off, as well as many more. Take a look and fill in the STL library.

Another month, another update to mess over everyone’s shipping! Yep, this month its the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (or PPWR) directive. This is intended to reduce the impact of packaging material waste on the environment. A good cause! Unfortunately, the method of doing so involves a layer of compliance that requires registering in every country you ship to within the EU, paying a registration fee to each one and then paying more based on how much packaging is being sent to each country. Putting aside the costs, there is also legal overhead that, while easily handled by large multinationals responsible for sending me magnets in a box 4x the size of the item, is a nightmare for the variety of smaller companies that fill the Ultramodern space. Because of this, you may have noticed several companies announcing that they are only selling to a limited number of EU countries (presumably the ones they get the most business from). If you want to read some more, Spectre Miniatures has a very good post on the subject on their blog, which is well worth a look.

Spectre Miniatures Changes Faces, Releases The Bootnecks and Prepares For The Cartel

Speaking of Spectre Miniatures, they have a new logo. I think it’s safe to say we’ve all noticed a move into other genres of games on top of the Ultramodern focus that the original logo was designed around. With Aftermath, Outbreak, Cosmic Horror, and Solstice already released, and the Dead Earth brand now trading from the Spectre website, it makes sense to make a small branding change that encompasses all of them. Plus, we now get to see more of the spooky little ghost that pops up around halloween normally.

Despite the logo change, Spectre has made no noise about stepping away from the Ultramodern space. In fact, in the last two weeks we have seen two sets graduate from Patreon releases to being available in store as either STLs or physical releases. The Javelin Detachment is intended to give your British Army platoon some long-range ATGM support (as well as some additional figures for the sections if you want the pack mule look of Afghanistan), giving you two figures firing the Javelin ATGM, two figures crouching and four more with Javelin mission tubes in their packs.

The Royal Marine Commandos have also arrived in their latest guise, one that has moved away from the regular Infantry look and more to focus on their separate identity and role. This means we have a set with all of them rolling the KS-1 and all the attachments (including two of them with thermal clip-on optics). These guys will be getting some support weapons in the near future according to the Patreon, but this is a good core of riflemen to get started with.

Looking ahead, we got our first taste of the upcoming cartel range over on the Patreon. The figures are still WIP, but we have a pair of gunmen with SMGs (a Uzi and twin MAC11s) to kick us off. However, it seems like the Cartel range is intended to be a pretty sizeable one (Spectre mentioning it was one of the most popular in the past) so there has been some patron discussion about what else to include within it. Stand by for more, although there has been a little delay as the Spectre team is out doing all things Cosmic Horror at NecronomiCon.

Austin Miniatures Cancels A Kickstarter to Launch A Kickstarter

It seems Austin Miniatures‘ attempt to get us some plastic MACV-SOG is not going to see the light of day yet. After an ambitious goal and lacklustre performance, the company has decided to cancel the first Red Jungle Miniatures Kickstarter and instead launched a new one to focus on the STLs. The new Kickstarter has launched and comes with a more restrained selection of tiers for the STLs, letting you pick between the two sides or go all in (there is even an early bird selection), with all tiers including a free modular figure, “Jungle Slayer”. The stretch goals don’t include the plastic VDV set but do include a few other additional forces as STLs, each with their own weapons and equipment – Australian SASR, Viet Cong, US Army Rangers and even Mercenaries ready to handle the Supernatural Vietnam that Red Jungle promises. The Kickstarter will run until September 10th, with the initial funding already cleared and well on its way to the stretch goal.

BobMack3d

Speaking of Kickstarters, BobMack3d is well on their way to launching the next instalment of their Cold War vehicle sets. After the AMX-30B2 and AMX-10P, the next vehicles continue the cavalry theme. In this case, we have a pair of lighter vehicles – the AMX-13-90 and the M201 jeep. The AMX-13-90 is an upgunned version of the postwar classic, complete with its oscillating turret, and was used by the French in the 1980s as a light tank (although it was slowly being phased out). However, it has a list of conflicts it was involved in as long as my arm, with operators such as Ecuador, Indonesia and Peru still using them to this day. The M201 may look very familiar (it’s a Willys Jeep with some minor tweaks), but at the time it was in use alongside the heavy armoured vehicles to provide scouting and utility purposes. There is a great Battle Order video covering the concept, but until the M201 was replaced by the Peugeot P4, it was common to see these vehicles alongside the tanks.

As for the core vehicle, both the M201 and the AMX-13-90 will get variants in the campaign’s stretch goals, such as missile-armed variants of the AMX-13/75. The Kickstarter will be kicking off on September 2nd and will come with Core vehicles (both stowed and unstowed) as well as a Turbobacker vehicle for those at the higher tier.

Flank March Miniatures Shows Off Some Ack-Ack

Flank March Miniatures, aside from making some fun battle reports of Battleground HD, has been hard at work finishing off Wave 3 of the East Germans for Kickstarter backers. This includes the monster above, the S-60 57mm anti-aircraft gun, a relic of the 1950s that found its way into various Soviet aligned nations. The kit above has been provided by Matt Webb of W3 Gaming, with Flank March now working on the sizable number of crew required to run this vehicle. Wave 3 is well on its way, so Kickstarter backers should be seeing this soon.

Pegasus Miniatures Is Almost Ready

After some delay, Pegasus Miniatures is almost ready to go. The core rulebook for their upcoming ruleset “Contact, Wait Out!” is nearly ready to go to the printers. The company is aiming to launch properly in September, with both the core rulebook and a small range of figures for Paramilities and DET 14 available. Although there’s no fixed date, things are definitely moving forward!

Urban Scatter Gaming Previews The Arcade And Releasing Figures?

Urban Scatter Gaming has continued work on the Arcade, which is being released this month. Because of the kit’s size, we’re sharing multiple preview posts to show it off. First up is the Exterior, complete with neon colours up front and industrial grime at the back. You also get to see how the modular approach works across the front of house and the warehouse behind. I really like these posts as they both help to show off the product and a hobby tutorial.

What is more unique is that this month is coming with something different. It looks like USG is having a little fun with making some characters for the setting, giving us some 1980s vibe for the building. We have a counterfeiting crime boss in his tracksuit and with a Beretta, and an arcade gamer in his shorts and sweatband, with both of them coming in their alive and undead forms. This is not going to be a regular thing, but it’s cool to see just what USG can do.

W3Gaming Prepares Charlie Country To Take Us To Vietnam

W3 Gaming is about to launch it’s new Kickstarter “Charlie Country”. Covering the US Army in Vietnam (Air Cav, Armour, Infantry and more), this Kickstarter will be bringing a selection of infantry models, crew for the BobMack3d range of vehicles and, if you haven’t picked them up, the vehicles themselves. W3 has already mentioned that there will be a separate USMC Kickstarter down the line; we might see a pretty interesting set of releases – if you look in the preview image above, you can see some regular infantry, an M60 gunner standing, a prone team and even some kind of scout in the foreground.

We also have some preview images of the vehicle crews we’ll be seeing. Designed to work with the BobMack3d vehicles, we can see some W3 crew in both the M48 tank and the M113 ACAV – you can see the mix of vehicle crew and regular joes manning the M60 MGs, which is pretty neat. We’ll see more details when the project launches mid-September, with plenty of unlocks to hit – you can even sign up now on the preview page.

Combat Octopus Hard at Work on 2007 Era British

Having only been in the early posing stage in the last update, we now see the four poses coming in Combat Octopus’s 2007 era Brits are almost ready for prime time. We have two riflemen, the classic kneeling NCO pose and then a standing machine gunner. These have been updated to be heavily laden with the PLCE webbing worn under the armour, giving them that profile that led to them being described as Donkeys by the Taliban. There are still a few tweaks to make (such as the heat shield on the Minimi not being used by the Brits) but this set is looking pretty great.

One thing that Combat Octopus has been pushing is that we’re getting a pretty solid combination of weapons for the time period. As well as the basic L85A2 and the L110A2 Minimi shown above, we’re also getting the GPMG for the machine gunner, as well as the L85A2 with RIS rail, the L85A2 with UGL and the Crow Cannon itself, the L86A2. We don’t have a specific date for when the set is coming out, but it looks like this is going to be a banger of a release.

Modern Miniatures Shows Off All Things South American

Modern Miniatures has shown off an update for what’s coming in September. The Narco Tank is coming next week, but the big update is the Narco Sub 2.0. MM has released a Narco Sub before, but this one has more options and even a version of the sub out of the water and up on the maintenance stand. Ideal for the centrepiece of a boat, the narco sub has options around the hatches, how many engines to mount onto it and more.

However, the big part of the update is what’s coming to the MyMiniFactory Tribe. The Tribe will be receiving a trio of South American buildings that wouldn’t look out of place in your return to Wildlands after a recent update. The pack includes a church, a medium sized residence and a small building. All three buildings have removable roofs and are intended for supportless FDM printing. These are all ready for release on September 1st

Turnbase Miniatures

Finally, Turnbase Miniatures has released its July sets, with a theme of a military parade or meeting disrupted by a low-profile but heavily armed force. At Tier 1, the set includes five figures wearing US Army service uniforms, including berets – with two figures in non-combat poses and a trio in the middle of action with pistols and a rifle. Against them, we have the Tier 2 release that gives us some fighters in civilian clothing, masks and limited tactical gear, carrying a mixture of shotguns and assault rifles for the fight. These sets are already out to Patrons while also being available from the Turnbase Miniatures MyMiniFactory page.
