Peeling myself away from a long weekend of WarDogs and Old World Gaming, it’s time for this week’s edition of The News Stand. And this week, in its new Saturday morning slot, there is a strangely high number of boats among the previews, releases, and more. Read on for the details!
As always, thanks to the members of the Special Projects and Logistics Group, News Fans and all the other patrons over on the ChargeBlog patreon – they buy my time to make this wrap-up each week, letting me take the time to gather all the news, check the details on them and prepare them in one single place. If you like these roundups and find them useful, why not chip in on Patreon and help to keep them going?
If you’re looking for greater insight into the Ultramodern Wargaming space than the SPOTREP series of articles is a great place to jump in. Available to Patrons of the ChargeBlog Patreon, the quarterly update linked above provides plenty of detail on the current state of the market, as well as the current thoughts on the various companies and rulesets in the space.

First up, we have some sad news from the World of Wargaming. The owners of Gripping Beast, a classic wargaming company that has been running since 1996, have decided to retire, with the intention to wind down Gripping Beast and shut the door on “Beast Towers”. In a post on the company’s Facebook page, the company have started the ball rolling on the eventual shutdown. However, they haven’t closed yet – the online shop will remain open for now, although sales will eventually be turned off. They’re also interested in selling off the ranges to a suitable buyer. This is only the first post, so we’ll see more information as they release it. I remember picking up some Gripping Beast Falklands Brits way back in the early days of this wargaming blog in 2015, and sadly never got around to painting them up. However, they have some incredibly comprehensive ranges covering the Dark Ages and more, including the physical side of the game SAGA.
Spectre Miniatures Preparing Civilians for September

First up, we have an update from Spectre Miniatures on the Patreon. As well as a few more Cartel figures to be released soon (and included for August patrons), the plan for September is to be all Civilians all the time. On the infantry side, this is a massive release with the aim of 30 unique sculpts (and potentially more). We’ve also discussed which types of civilians to make with the Patrons, but we’ll share more details as the previews begin. On the vehicle side, there will also be a set of Civilian vehicles to decorate the streets, but we’ll see more of them soon.

Speaking of, we have our first glimpse of some hostile civilians on the Patreon. Dressed in western civilian clothes and in a mixture of mildly nakred, very narked and “I’m going to post this on TikTok” poses, this is definitely a good start to any crowd of angry civilians your troops may encounter. They look like they will also work pretty well both in the crowd shown above and individually spotting your operators as they get into position. We have similar packs from Spectre before (the gentleman in the centre is definitely similar in style to one you can see in the Spectre rulebook), but these will be updated to the newer digital sculpts. It also looks like we’ll be getting some workmen-style figures intended to represent oil rig workers or ship crew (hopefully no being too expendable to the players). Stand by for both sets of information soon.
Black Site Studios are Messing Around In Boats

A new update from Black Site Studios shows them working on a brand-new boat for their range. Having previously had the MV Australias for their cargo ship, Black Site now has something a little nicer in the form of a super yacht. Referred to as the “Aphrodite Super Yacht“, this is a multilevel piece of terrain that is basically a table all by itself.

As you can see, you have five levels to fight over, ranging from the bridge at the top of the ship to the large helicopter landing pad and various rooms for all your guests and dealings to take place in. The kit is an advanced pre-painted MDF construction, with plenty of internal details (such as hot tubs, pools, dancing poles and more) to fill the space, and even some acrylic pieces for that high-end look. This is a chunky kit (with a price to match it) and it is currently a pre-order, with the intention to release later this year as each kit is cut and sent out. If you want it for yourself, you can find it at the Black Site Studios website.
With the Aphrodite on pre-order, the MV Australis has also returned for one last journey, with a final chance to pick it up before they take the kit out of range.
BobMack3d Shows Off More French Armour

The Division Mรฉcanisรฉe Kickstarter from BobMack3d is still ongoing for another week, but we have a few more previews out now. First up we have a printed example of the AMX-30B2 from the Gulf War, showing off some theatre-specific additions (that would also be handy for other desert users) as well as showing it fully kitted out with stowages (such as stacks of 20mm cannon ammo). Although not a complete revolution, this is a great upgrade for the existing model.

Speaking of upgrades, we have also seen the Flank March French vehicle crew now in situ and painted up aboard their steads. As you can see above, we have one crewman in the turret of the AMX-10, as well as two different tank commands. There were also some renders of the crew in the AMX-13 DCA and the first placement of the French infantry that will be manning the Hotchkiss M201. As with all Flank March releases, these figures look awesome and take the impressive vehicles to the next level.
If you’re interested in adding some French to your forces, the Kickstarter runs until Friday September 18th, so jump in now to make sure you get your hands on this collection of vehicles. The Kickstarter is very close to getting the original AMX-13, a classic vehicle with plenty of
Echelon Software Releases _NearPresent Game Box

Echelon Software has the final parts of the _NearPresent wargame, bringing all the cards, templates, and aerial assets needed to play the game. This has meant we now have a complete core box (available either with the rulebook or without). Similar to the core box we saw with BPRE28mm, these are not starter boxes or the first taste to get you to buy more – these boxes give you everything you need to play, with full releases for both sides (including both the infantry figures and the customisable CCTs alongside them) and all the templates, tokens, cards and boards that you would need. The only thing missing is the terrain (available separately, as we covered last week).

As well as picking up the new gameplay items in the core box, you can also pick up the Close Combat Accessories kit separately. This set includes many items fans of BPRE28mm might recognise (such as the radial template and the act/frag chits) but also includes many items specific to _NearPresent. The Ops Cards include all the cards for units, air support and interventions that you can pick from for both players, while the new Task Boards give you somewhere specific to put the most visually interesting part of the set – the Airspace Munitions set. With a whole phase dedicated to them, and mirroring the importance of fires in the Near Present warfare that the game depicts, it’s handy to have a set of markers showing the various munitions overhead that are about to rain down on the target area.
Pendraken Releases The Big Boat

Oft rumoured, and once previewed, the Big Boat from Red Vectors has been rumoured for a while, a design that hadn’t been released to the wider market. However, thanks to Pendraken, we have finally seen this absolutely massive kit released. At 1900mm long, 340mm wide and spread over multiple floors, The Big Boat is a whole other level of table to play on. The range includes both the ship itself and plenty of detailing pieces, including internal furniture, doors, control panels and even some resin lifeboats to add the final touches.
Something to note is that the complete kit is 4kg of material, a sizable weight to ship around – don’t expect it to be cheap. You may be able to pick it up from one of the shows that Pendraken attends (such as their own Battleground in Middlesbrough).
Black Hills Games Releases GIGN

Last week, Black Hills Games released the latest set, featuring seven operatives from France’s Groupe d’Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale (GIGN). These figures carry a mix of weapons, though they focus primarily on the CZ Bren 2 in 7.62x39mm (an unusual variant the GIGN chose for various purposes); we also get a shield bearer with a suppressed MP7 and a breacher with a semi-auto Benelli. As with most Black Hills Games releases, the set lets you pick between various modular head options, including the classic visor look beloved by anyone who played Counter-Strike. If you want a set of these for yourself, you can find them on the Black Hills Games Gumroad and My MiniFactory.
Modern Miniatures Previews October Releases
We have a new update from Modern Miniatures about the upcoming releases across his various platforms in October.

First up: the second half of the Vehicle and Terrain tier on Patreon. Last week we saw the SUVs; this week we have the luxury couple they are escorting. It’s a classic, boxy, high-end design and would be ideal for senior dignitaries, business leaders, and other very important folks.

On the figure side, the Figures tier is ideal for those who want bank robbers to come diving out of SUVs (or, more likely, for the FBI using the SUVs to go after). Inspired by a certain Boston-set crime film, the set is a group of robbers in nun outfits with masks and a selection of firepower. These guys are definitely not the highest-end criminals, but can definitely put some rounds down with the assault rifles and suppressed SMGs. No further details on their modular nature at this time (I’m guessing not), but if you want some robbers on the street, this is a good set to work with.

Meanwhile, on the My MiniFactory side, the garbage truck we saw last week has been joined by a motocross bike, the perfect vehicle for criminals looking for a getaway.
All of these models will be out at the start of October, and we may see some painted previews before the month is out.
WarDaddy Studios Releases Modern Insurgent Militia Forces

Finally, WarDaddy Studios has released its new set of Modern Insurgent Militia fighters. This release is a large 25-figure set, including a mixture of leaders, rifles and various support weapons to let you start building up forces ready for the tabletop. Split across three packs (Insurgents 1, Insurgents 2 and the Weapons Group), these figures are designed for 15mm but also work scaled up to 20mm and 28mm. There is also an additional pack with all the figures rescaled to 10mm, ideal for those who prefer the smaller scale warfare. Future releases will add even more combat elements, with snipers, FALs, sappers and mortars all mentioned. The rest of September is going to be a return to the sci-fi and Vietnam, although the Future Mercs could definitely work their way into Ultramodern games

If you want to support my work on gathering the news together, my Patreon is the best way to keep things going. With a minimal cost of ยฃ1 a month, every little helps to keep the news spigot flowing and to let me cover more of the suppliers, rules writers and inspirational creatives out there.
Of course, if you are a REAL news fan, there is a higher tier for the News Fan. For ยฃ5 a month (or ยฃ1.25ish a post), you can guarantee youโll get your weekly dose of news updates and keep me going.
If you really want to help keep this site running, you can join the Special Projects and Logistics Group for ยฃ7.50 a month. This gives you access to a whole host of additional blog content – more in-depth analysis on the news, SPOT-REPs to act as a guide to the industry, updates on various projects I’m personally working on (such as the ChargeReal or Project Elements) or even more unannounced items coming soon. For less than ยฃ2 a week, this tier will make sure you see everything I get up to on the blog, perfect for someone wanting a finger on the pulse of the Ultramodern niche.
