Yep, you’re reading the title right. After 150 editions and as the 900th post on my blog, I think it’s time to hang up the news hat and bring The News Stand to an end. Since starting in August 2023, it’s been over three years of covering the latest updates from Ultramodern Wargaming (and occasionally straying into other semi-related spaces). We’ve seen companies rise and sadly fall, a steady stream of Patreon releases, and new games hitting the internet. We’ve seen a steady stream of figures in the “Fast Helmet – AR15 – Plate Carrier” combo (as well as plenty without), and new technologies have brought even more options for how Ultramodern Wargamers get their rules, figures, terrain, and more.
It’s been a great ride, but now feels like the right time to get off. 150 is a lot of anything to do, and I’ve definitely reached a stage where I would rather have the time spent each week working on the hobby projects I want to work on, without the same level of rush that each week will bring. During my time away, I’ve managed to get started on a variety of other projects, both for new games and a return to Ultramoderns. Just because I’m not writing every week doesn’t mean you won’t hear from me.
I’ll cover more at the end, and we have news to get to first, but for now I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has read the post each week, everyone who has commented on the news, those who have helped me gather the news each week (including those who sent me things to cover), and of course the fine people on my Patreon and Ko-fi who helped to pay for the time it took to make this post each week. Without all of you, this blog wouldn’t be even a shadow of what it is.
Spectre Miniatures Releases PMCs and Russian Vehicles.

First up, Spectre Miniatures has been looking on the other side of the Iron Curtain for its store releases in October. With a Soviet Truck, Bus (I’m sure the Reforger fans recognise this one especially) and 4×4, the new range of vehicles is intended to be the perfect backing for Eastern Europe and other Soviet aligned states. All three vehicles have appeared on the Spectre Patreon for the highest tier, but they are now available through the store as both physical and digital products. These are definitely vehicles that will be handy for a lot of games in Spectre’s catalogue, not just Operations but Aftermath and Outbreak as well.

Over on the Patreon, this month’s focus was PMCs. Inspired by the PMC Delta from the original Kickstarter (one of my favourite sets), the Western PMC (currently available to Patrons) updates the GWOT-style PMC to the modern day, mixing civilian clothing with high-end weaponry. Most of the team are armed with assault rifles, but the LAW, Minimi, and M32 grenade launcher definitely give a punch. The Eastern PMC is still WIP but you can definitely see some nice details (such as the variety of mags on the RPK gunner’s chest) that will make these guys stand out next to the regular Russian figures already in the range. This set will soon be coming to patrons, giving you two squads ready for a PMC v PMC battle somewhere dodgy.
556 Studios Launches Eastern European Town Set Kickstarter

Going live literally as I was typing this post up, 556 Studios has launched a new Kickstarter. Urban Operations brings a set of 3D-printable buildings and modular roads inspired by Ukrainian locations to the tabletop. This has been floating around my newsfeed for the last few weeks (mostly showing up while I was on my break) and has a few very interesting pieces to it, intending to deliver a seriously comprehensive project. One of them is the Modular Roads set – we’ve seen these before, but 556 has gone with OpenLock to make clipping them together easier. This road network is pretty in-depth (especially once the stretch goals get hit), making it an ideal starting point for a whole host of board layouts. To go on top of that, there is an in-depth modular wall system (using dovetail joints between the pillars and the selection of panels). Finally, 556 also includes a map builder for Kickstarter (something that seems increasingly popular recently; I guess we’re finding a use for AI), which, based on the video, seems pretty great for planning out your boards. And that’s even before we get to the 8 residential buildings, 6 commercial buildings, and 3 public buildings in the core set (and expanded further with the stretech goals).

While I have usually been doubtful about most projects that appear in my news feed with a whiff of AI to them, the team have shown off some printed examples. You can see the buildings are looking pretty great (I especially like the second one showing the local shops), and as always, printed examples are the best sign. I’ve also taken a look at the previous project from them, and there are some very nice items in the Military Outpost collection. I’ve backed the project, and I’m looking forward to when it ships in Mid-December (just in time for a new year of gaming) and you can back the project over on Kickstarter right now!
Austin Miniatures Preparing Operation Nimrod Miniatures

Austin Miniatures is preparing for a brand new Kickstarter coming soon. Intended to be as short and sweet as its inspiration, the upcoming 14-day campaign will be to create figures for SAS Operators during Operation Nimrod, the Iranian Embassy Siege that introduced the SAS to the public imagination and the idea of being “I was the first man on the balcony” to legions of blokes down the pub. The plan for the Kickstarter is to distribute STLs and physical figures through the campaign, while post-campaign the figures will only be available as physical figures from Austin Miniatures and Desk-Ops. No details on the launch date, but you can find the pre-launch page on Kickstarter now.

However, if you want anything else from Austin Miniatures, they are currently running a Veterans Day sale through November. This is a massive 50% off their webstore, ideal for picking up their modular sets and getting to printing!
BobMack3d Shows Off A Very Small FROG

BobMack3d is launching their latest Kickstarter “Small Scale Soviet Cold War Armour Pt1” on Thursday 12th of November. After several previews of the main stuff, we now get to see the TURBOBACKER tier vehicle. Or should I say vehicles – this time, those backing at the highest level will be receiving the FROG-7 in both its launcher (with both travelling and firing poses) and reload vehicle. Not really something you’d see on the board at 28mm, but drop down to 1/300th and you might be seeing divisional-level missile artillery, although I would assume not using the nuclear warhead. Alongside this vehicle for the TURBOBACKERS, the main campaign will include a good selection of Cold War Soviet vehicles intended for micro armour scales (aka 15mm and smaller) – this includes three versions of the T-64, the 2S3 self-propelled artillery, BMP-2 IFV, Kamaz 4310 truck and even some BMP pattern command vehicles.
If you want to be ready for when the project launches on Thursday, you can find it on Kickstarter now.
Don’t Drink And Paint Launches Website

A major change for Don’t Drink and Paint. After months of chasing after his releases via Instagram and Cults3D, he now has a central home on the internet for all projects. His entire range of figures is now available there, as well as providing more details on his two main projects – Societal Collapse, featuring a modern-day apocalypse inspired by certain games, and NOVA: PROXY WARS 2055, the upcoming near-future war setting that Joakim is working on (and where all the cool borderline future tech lives). He has also set up a way to commission sculpts from him (or at least start the ball rolling if you’re interested in using his skills for your own project). I’ll have to dig into some of his world-building when I get a second, but it’s cool to see him take the next step in a wargames company’s life.
Flank March Miniatures Previews Ze Germans

Flank March Miniatures is getting ready for the second part of BRUDERKRIEG next year, finally delivering the West Germans to go up against their Eastern counterparts. As you can see above, the Bundeswehr comes with a pile of new heads. This is still the era of the Germans wearing old US M1 Helmets, although the wire mesh is a uniquely German tweak. There are also a mixture of soft cap options, with berets from a mixture of units, a side cap and even a Winter hat with ear coverings. I’d also expect this campaign to come with the head tool that the East Germans included, so you’ll be able to mix and match the parts for even mroe variety.

Of course, if you were a cool person who was signed up to the Flank March Miniatures Newsletter, you would have also seen these three previews showing off some more figures that are all sculpted up. As you can see, this is the era of the G3, but you can also see the PzF 44 (Germany’s lightweight Anti-Tank weapon) and the MP2, the Cold War Bundeswehr’s SMG. This is already a pretty good-looking set of figures, and knowing Flank March, we’ll be getting a full platoon’s worth of guys and all their weapons.

If you want to see some of Flank March Miniatures’ figures in the flesh, Flank March and Full Metal Miniatures will be at Warfare 2026 in Farnborough on the 14th/15th of November. He’s promising FISH & CHIPS all weekend, which either means he’s playing Battleground HD all weekend or he’s getting the fryer out.
Haywire Modern Books Now Arriving In Gamer’s Hands

A funny disadvantage of going away for a while was a certain parcel turning up with a delivery from Modiphus. Yep, Haywire Modern is not out there in its final hardback form, and I have now received my copy (hence the horrifying desk picture above). It’s a really well-done book, with excellent layout work alongside the rules and that great feel in the hand you have from a solid rulebook. Congratulations to Martin and the team for getting the book out there, and I’m looking forward to digging into it more! If you want your own copy, you can find it on the Modiphus store or at retailers like Element Games.
Jagers Miniatures Releases STLs for Operation Banner

Jagers Miniatures has a brand new set of releases, giving us figures intended for Operation Banner. Comprised of three rifle teams and a Section leader, these teams may be lacking in the heavy firepower for Northern Europe but are instead equipped for patrolling the streets of Northern Ireland, with at least one figure per pack carrying the Federal Riot Gun for firing baton rounds (a weapon that reminds you why they are called Less Than Lethal rather than Non-Lethal). Each set also includes one rifle with the SUIT optic, while the Section Leader carries his Sterling. These packs are available in both 20mm and 28mm, as well as an all-in set for both scales.

As with most modern sets, these packs are sold with separate heads, letting you theme your set – this can be either the Parachute Regiment or the Fusiliers, or you can equip them with riot helmets. It would have been nice to see an additional suitable head for the Section Leader for the Fusiliers, and maybe a helmet with the visor down, but this is a great start. Now you just need some kind of game to use these figures for…
Pegasus Miniatures Launches “Contact, Wait Out!”

Apologies to Dougie and Alex at Pegasus Miniatures, as I chose exactly the wrong time to take a break! Because a week after my last edition of The News Stand, they launched the company and went live with their new rules and figure range. “Contact, Wait Out!” is now live on the Pegasus Miniatures website alongside ranges for 14 INT Operators and Paramilitaries. There is also a set of custom markers we have seen, as well as an All In Deal for the miniatures and rulebook.
Just because the game is out, however, doesn’t mean it’s done. We’ve already seen additional downloads for the rules, including a game report, a character reference sheet, and a game report showing the rules in action. Already a good start, and I’m looking forward to catching up with them at Battleground on the 29th of November in Middlesbrough.
Urban Scatter Gaming Launches Website, Previews Paintball Game and More

You go away for a month, and suddenly everyone is making websites. Urban Scatter Gaming has set up a new home on the web too, bringing together both his STL releases and a central hub for his other various projects. We had previously seen the Design Suite; well, now it has a home alongside several other game aids to give you quick and easy access to them on your PC or phone. This will also be a central hub for selling designs, with the STL shop now live and physical prints coming soon.

Of course, that isn’t the only thing going on with USG. It seems like he is already working on a quick-playing skirmish ruleset called “SPLAT!“, bringing 6v6 paintballing to the tabletop. Having read the blog post covering the basics of the rules, this is a D6-based game that seems to capture the basics of paintball, intended to be easy to pick up for both adults and children. We’re still waiting for more details on the game but as you can see in the preview above, it seems Wedge is already hard at work on some figures and scenery for it.
Warfront Studio Sends Out First Plastic Frames of US Infantry And More Updates

I have been reluctant to cover Warfront Studio in the past, especially after being bombarded by Facebook adverts, aggressive posting in the usual groups and big promises. Well, a lot of things have happened, so I think it’s worth covering before I step out of the news game. They currently have three plastic sets in various stages of development. The final release for the US Infantry is currently being held up at UK customs due to some issues, but luckily it seems like they will be ready for dispatch by the 12th of November at the latest. The Western PMC set iks also almost ready for release, but looks like it’s shifted to the end of the year. The British Infantry have had their painted prototypes shown off, and pre-orders open on the 15th of November for a release in January 2027.
I have a set of the US Infantry on order and will definitely be covering them in the post News Stand world. They had offered me a prototype frame, but I was more interested in seeing the final product all boxed up (also, they asked, as I was still busy with work, so I wouldn’t have assembled anything in time). However, several other people in the community (including my friend Bill, who is part of the reason I try to attend Salute every year to catch up) have been hard at work with the protoype and you can see examples on the Modern Miniatures group.
Black Hills Games Releases Add-On For Jialong Commandos, Delays South Korean SF

After releasing the Chinese Jiaolong Commandos set at the end of September, Black Hills Games released an additional add-on pack to supplement the original team. This CQB add-on includes two SMG figures and a shotgun carrier, ideal for adding some extra room-clearing punch.
Unfortunately, between this set, illness in the family and difficulty gathering the reference images, it seems that the October set of the South Korean Special Forces has been slightly delayed. Originally intended to be released around the same time as this year’s Modern Warfare 4, which also features them, this set will bring 7 operators with a mixture of K13 carbines, a K3 LMG and a K14 sniper rifle. The other cool news is that the Hong Kong SDU team (the Flying Tigers) have been added to the upcoming list, as there are apparently some very cool reference images to work from.
Combat Octopus Hard At Work On Verlorene

Combat Octopus, after launching his project inspired by the game Morimens that is currently on MyMiniFactory, has been working away on the first packs for his Velorene teams. Inspired by German long-range recce patrols but intended for his custom setting, these figures are going to be wearing rucksacks and parkas, with chest rigs carrying their mags. Weapons-wise, we’re looking at the UMP45, G36K and HK416 for all things Bundeswehr, giving plenty of options for getting them on the table. These have been slightly delayed as Combat Octopus is finishing them off, but expect a release soon.
Modern Miniatures Launches November Releases.

As is tradition, Modern Miniatures released his November sets on November 1st, hitting across both Patreon and MyMiniFactory. This month brought a new set of parts for a hideout on the terrain side, with pieces ideal for all sorts of run-down industrial areas (the test board reminded me of the jungle boatyard from Max Payne 3). A modular wooden deck set gives you all the parts to add some subtle elevation tweaks and raise structures off the board surface, while a trio of buildings give you that classic metal-walled warehouse, side shed and office room (all with interiors, doors and places where you can fit clear filament windows in place). The standout, I think, has to be the oil tank scatter piece: four oil storage tanks with a walkway over the top – the perfect addition to any table to add that industrial feel.

On the figures side, we have something that anyone who liked the old Spectre MENA Regulars will also like. This Generic Soldier release comes with 6 different poses (including a radio operator), and each pose also includes both an AK- and AR-armed equivalent, letting you theme them for whoever is backing and supporting your force. The pack also includes a pile of head options with MICH-equipped heads (either wearing NVGs, NVGs raised or entirely clean) and a set of heads with the old-style military caps that work for Afghan National Police or some Latin American military force. This is a pretty handy set to have in the stockpile, and I think I may print off a few and get them painted up.

Meanwhile, over on the MyMiniFactory Tribe, a double hit of vehicles is this month’s release. Along with a family minivan (for decorating the board or serving as the getaway car for your criminals/CIA agents), there is also a version of THE BEAST, the US Presidential Limousine. Ideal for a high-intensity tabletop mission, these two vehicles are a handy addition to the collection, and like the rest of Modern Miniatures’ vehicles, they will print beautifully.
Turnbase Miniatures Previews September Release

Despite being into November, Turnbase Miniatures has only just shown off the first preview for the September set, giving us a high-tech CBRN figure with an MCX. The news is that they plan to catch up on releases in November.

On the other hand, October also saw the release of a Philippine Scout Ranger set, a unique figure set of jungle fighters intended to clash with anti-government forces. The Long Range Recon Patrol vibe is pretty strong, and I could see this team being popular for something like Haywire. Turnbase always does a good job when releasing the Filipino sets, such as the Special Forces and GKN Simba.
Wardaddy Studios Shows Off Early GWOT US Infantry

Finally, WarDaddy Studios has been hard at work on some early Global War on Terror US Infantry in 15mm. Coming with the sheer pile of figures that every WarDaddy infantry pack includes, the set will include both M16- and M4-armed troops, allowing for both US Army and Marines from 2004 onwards. Alongside the riflemen, there will also be the usual squad-level support weapons (such as M249S and grenadiers), while heavy weapons will arrive in a future release. No announcement on when the figures are planned to be released, but they are looking great!
That’s it – you’ve reached the end of The News Stand. It’s been great bringing you all the news each week, and I’ve enjoyed a lot of what I’ve done. I’m still going to be watching the space, still making the occasional comments on it (although maybe mostly to the Patrons, but we’ll see), and still picking up all the bits I need to help me roll dice and enjoy the gaming with all the extra time I’ll have.
If you want to keep up with what I’m doing (and keep reading the blog when it posts), the best way to follow along is at Patreon’s free tier or on Facebook. I also post on Instagram and Bluesky, but Patreon is quickly becoming the second channel for this blog, with some behind-the-scenes chat and more. I’m also not going away – there is a pile of blog posts I’m sat on to finish, covering everything from Roman wargaming, 15mm figures, Infinity, more BPRE28mm and more Ultramodern stuff (such as the Combat Octopus British I’ve been working through). And of course, that doesn’t even include the stuff I’ve been working on behind the scenes, and I’m looking forward to showing off what I’ve been grinding away at in the background (you may want to get some D10s together).
For now, though – start the music, go forth, roll dice, buy things from the companies I’ve covered in three years of this column, paint them and enjoy the Ultramodern Wargaming hobby. And if you ever catch me at a wargames show, feel free to ask me when the next edition is being released.
