The week has ticked over, so it’s time to cover all the latest in the world of Ultramodern Wargaming. New releases from Spectre, previews from Combat Octopus and many others, and even a sign of life from Haywire. Read on for more!

  • Range Impressions: Courage In Contact

    Range Impressions: Courage In Contact

Welcoming a new range to the world of Ultramodern Wargaming is always fun, getting to take a look at new models, new styles and really dig into them. Alan from White Dragon Miniatures, a scrappy new company from Nottingham, very kindly sent me a pack of goodies. Contained within was a selection of models from the Courage in Contact range he is producing, giving me a chance to sit down and take a look at them. Wait, what do you mean that White Dragon Miniatures isn’t new? And I first talked about his stuff back in 2018? And I’ve bought…

  • SITREP: … And Tiny Titans

    SITREP: … And Tiny Titans

Previously on… Charge strays further from the 28mm light I assembled some buildings in preparation for a game of tiny machines of war Now, it should be said that my former housemate is someone who has managed to avoid ever collecting mainline Games Workshop, instead preferring to jump into the specialist games (such as his Delaque I ended up butting heads against). There is one exception – an Imperial Knight sat on his book shelf. Man loves himself some glorious machines of war. So surprise, surprise, he has bought in to the game Adeptus Titanicus, which is based all around…

    SITREP: Tiny Buildings…

With a company day off on Friday, I was able to arrange an evening of wargaming and food with my former housemate (who now lives relatively close that really, I should be playing more games with him). After some discussions, we decided it was time for him to get his Adeptus Titanicus collection out for some robot smashing. However, my friend did mention that we might need some more terrain which did a dangerous thing – giving me a reason to print and paint some 6mm terrain. Let me explain. My friend over at The Lazy Forger has been (for…

  • SITREP: A Little bit of Playtesting

SITREP: A Little bit of Playtesting

Thanks to the Easter break, my Dastardly regular opponent found himself with some free time on a Tuesday evening. Which for me meant it was time to finally get some playtesting of my fantasy rules in. I’ve mentioned them a little bit but this was the first time we actually got it onto a board, getting a chance to try out all the features. And so far, it works! The core functionality, the basic dice rolling engine seems to work well – we both had fun with the combat and I personally felt it had that imagination firing effect that…

  • 3d Printing – 16 Months and a Saturn later

    3d Printing – 16 Months and a Saturn later

In December 2020 I got my first 3D printer, the Elegoo Mars Pro and so began the trip into the 3d printing. I’ve written about it a few times before over the last year, as well as showing off some more models I’ve been working on that have been printed out at home. I’ve even managed to get some of the 3d printed pieces on the game table, allowing me branch out into entirely new areas of gaming or expand the stuff I’m working on. The main thing though – what’s my current feeling on 3d printing? Honestly, I still…

  • A Little Bit of Sharp Practise

A Little Bit of Sharp Practise

Having been working like a mad person, I decided to actually take the easter bank holidays off this year. And so, as is tradition, I messaged my Dastardly Regular opponent to request a scuffle/setup a game. After a misunderstanding of days and me declining to run an Ultramoderns game (the rules still being WIP), I was greeted with an unusual idea thanks to the addition of my Creative Regular Opponent. “Napoleonic Sharp Practise?” Now, as you might know, I have a limited interest in the era of black powder games (probably due to falling asleep during games of Black Powder…

  • SITREP: Faceless King

    SITREP: Faceless King

Another 3d printed model – this time from Vae Victis. I spotted this “Evil Paladin” among the special characters included in the Match release and just had to get to work on him. With the mask and crown, I was strongly inspired by both the Leper from Darkest Dungeon and Baldwin from Kingdom of Heaven. Painting was, as you can see, pretty simple. I base coat all my miniatures in black (because I’m a psychopath) so painting in white requires some work. For this reason, I painted all the robes in Iraqi sand before covering in white. A black wash…

  • SITREP: Bazi Counter-Espionage Team

    SITREP: Bazi Counter-Espionage Team

Another set of models finished, another set I’m really excited to write about! These guys are 3d printed figures made using two of Combat Octopus’s kits – the bodies are from the Eastern European Criminal set with some heads from the MENA Civilians release. After printing on the Elegoo Saturn at 0.03mm, I ended up with a nice set of modular pieces. The reason for this combo was wanting to make some figures suitable for Bazi Counter-Espionage teams. Seeing as we’re getting into campaign season (and reading up on some CIA/JSOC teams in the War on Terror), I’m planning for…
