Adventures in Wargaming

The week has ticked over, so it’s time to cover all the latest in the world of Ultramodern Wargaming. New releases from Spectre, previews from Combat Octopus and many others, and even a sign of life from Haywire. Read on for more!
My original plan for last weekend was to spend my Saturday relaxing – I’d had a busy weekend on the one previous (with family events and running a game for one half of TTE), the Sunday was to be airsoft, so Saturday would be a lazy, lazy day. And then Ben, the other half of TTE casually mentioned an interest in a game of Sangin and so, I offered to run a quick game. After quickly writing up a basic idea, sending off the in-character brief and then cursing myself for not having written a character creator app yet, I…
Okay, unlike the last two times, this was entirely on me. I’ve recently been chatting with Dan over on the Ultramodern Wargaming Group/The Table’s Edge podcast/DeskOps store (Christ he’s busy) about Skirmish Sangin and how it plays as an alternative to Spectre. So, after realising I was spending a whole Saturday doing family stuff, I decided to treat myself to an afternoon of wargaming and offered to run him through a quick game of the playtest rules currently on the Sangin group. Plus, it gave me a chance to scribble down a new scenario taking place in the ChargeReal. Of…
Damn, it it’s happened again. My former housemate/sneaky Delaque friend is someone I keep meaning to play more games with (seeing as he is close by, a good friend and someone who is fun to play against). However, thanks to the churn of life, we have ended up missing out on a few opportunities until literally on Monday he popped up and asked if I fancied some Necromunda this week. And after pulling myself out of the Vietnam Flashback of the last campaign we played, we agreed to jump back into one of our favourite games. Although we did change…
It’s the end of a new month and we’re now entering August. In the real world I’m in the stages of buying a house, having entered the stage of “Solicitors send letters to decide on legal things” which means there is a lot of hurry up and wait. I’ve already started packing some things away that I’m not using a huge amount (such as my airbrush and spray booth). This also means that Mars Pro has taken a little nap as it’s prepared to move. On the plus side, turning it off does give me plenty of time to redo…
It always starts the same way. He did have some new recently painted MDF gantries to play with. And as we hadn’t managed to get a game in since April, we decided to jump into something quick, easy to play and fun. And so, I broke open the box of unloved Space Marines and headed across to York for a quick game of the new edition of Killteam. I have in the past made my thoughts on 40k pretty clear (love the setting and the models, hate the game and it’s ever changing nature that makes keeping your army current…
In between my work on painting up the mountain of Shurta figures from the BPRE box, I’ve been taking a break to paint up some of the single figures that have been piling up on my desk. It just so happened that the latest two (the CIA SAD figure from Spectre’s Patreon and the Charity figure from Anthalonica) ended up being painted up in a similar way. There is something very useful about armed figures painted in a mix of civilian and camo. As someone who plays a variety of different games and missions, this style lets you represent anyone…
So as you might guess, I didn’t play my wargame on Sunday. Instead, I found myself writing this – a system for generating patrols in the back country of Al-Bawaaba, a province of the Albion Commonwealth that previously features in the mission “Training Day” . Basically, with a few dice rolls you can setup a foot patrol for your section, roll up any objectives and see what you’re up against. You still need to roll up the stats for each of the forces (something I’ll setup automatically later) but everything else should be there and able to change every time.…
Surprise, time for the start of the month update. As seen in the past, I am terrible at sticking with my carefully laid out templates for anything longer than a year so it’s time for a change! Basically anytime I’m doing a set of titles and I start having to write “Not much happened!” it’s time to tweak how I report things. Taking a break Yeah, it’s been a bit quiet around here hasn’t it? As I mentioned earlier in the month, I started the month off with a week on holiday travelling down south. Disconnecting for a week, stepping…
