Adventures in Wargaming

The week has ticked over, so it’s time to cover all the latest in the world of Ultramodern Wargaming. New releases from Spectre, previews from Combat Octopus and many others, and even a sign of life from Haywire. Read on for more!
Hey everyone! So the blog has been a little quiet in June – I didn’t intend for it to be quite so quiet, it just worked out this way. First up, I had a week on holiday down in Devon, seeing family and being completely detached from the tiny mans (except some Lego building with my nephew). Getting away was good and I even managed to plan out a few upcoming things. Second, I’m in the middle of a potential upheaval that might impact some hobby time in the coming months. More details when it actually goes through but I’m…
The month of May is over and we are soon heading into June, and with that summer. This month was actually a bit of an up and down. Had some really bad times but I’m hopefully starting to push through them and onto new things. More importantly, next month is starting with me taking the first holiday away from home for SEVERAL years. Things might be a little bit quiet while I take some time off – in fact I’ll be setting off when this post goes up! Anyway, back to the update. For the first time, this monthly update…
Out of all the games I’ve played in the last year or so, I think BPRE 28mm is probably the game that could mostly easily be played using with standees. Simple LOS rules, small play areas and 2D terrain – this game is basically a board game. But hey, standees can only do so much. And with Black Powder Red Earth being a graphic novel series, getting models of the combatants in the series was honestly probably the biggest draw for lots of people when the game was announced. And when the previews were shown off, there was a lot…
Well, It’s finally here. When I covered BPRE 28mm back in November 2021, I said to myself that I wouldn’t pick up the big game box until the OPFOR side had figures. Well, jump forward to May and the bad guys have now have some figures, more money has gone to support BPRE, HMRC/Parcelforce got their required pound of flesh and I’m sat here with a hole in my wallet and an ominous black box with an Operator on the front. Now lets crack this thing open and see what’s inside. Disclosure: I was offered a discount on my order…
A Butcher Witch? Yeah I’ve heard of them. Looking for signs and portents in the entrails of slaughtered cows and pigs, using blood and organ as fuel for their magics. Frankly, it’s a wonder the Church of the Empress hasn’t locked them all up, but the Butcher Witches as an order are much more careful about not being seen as otherworldly or somehow corrupted. They hide their markings under their clothes, taking part in the day to day life of the village to be seen by the common people rather than living in a hut in a bog. It probably…
We joined a mercenary company operating out of Ferrumgard due our trip out to the Marches. I was surprised to find them clad in Imperial Colours and luckily they were loyal servants to the Empress rather than sim. Well armed and well equipped, they proved to be very useful on the road ahead. Scribe Feldherr, Imperial Servant One of the first 3d printing Kickstarter I joined after getting my printer was the Dogs of War Free Companies set, a group of figures representing a group ideal for some kind of landsknecht mercenaries in either Fantasy or Historical gaming. I was…
Way back in April 2021, Anthalonica Wargaming managed to fund a Kickstarter called Bobbies, Baddies and Bootnecks. Designed to rapidly expand the offerings of Anthalonica from the initial release focused on British Police, the Kickstarter offered up 4 squad packs as the starting point before broadening out into a whole HOST of new additions. Ranging from French Armed Police to Armed Civilians and Israeli Counter-Terrorist team, the Kickstarter managed to demolish it’s target and storm up through the stretch goals, adding in Royal Marine Commandos, SBS and even a certain Sneaky American agent. Well, being the wargamer I am, I immediately jumped…
April is over and it’s now time to catch up on what’s I’ve been doing. A pretty good month actually, I managed to get a fair amount done! COLLECTING Shockingly, I continue on my “not buying physical models” spree, mostly because I’m just printing them instead. That said, a friend of mine and I did exchange some presents we hadn’t managed to give to each other. As well as a few more Empress WW2 pieces, I also got the giant cat! (who I immediately built). Also, at the end of the month, I purchased a Complete Target Package for Black…
