It’s the start of June, and soon we shall be entering Summer proper. But no matter the weather, we have all the latest news from the Ultramodern Wargaming World. Zombies, 2D Structures, SAS Operators and more! Read on for all the details!
As always, thanks to the members of the Special Projects and Logistics Group, News Fans and all the other patrons over on the ChargeBlog patreon – they buy my time to make this wrap-up each week, letting me take the time to gather all the news, check the details on them and prepare them in one single place. If you like these roundups and find them useful, why not chip in on Patreon and help to keep them going?
If you’re looking for greater insight into the Ultramodern Wargaming space than the SPOTREP series of articles is a great place to jump in. Available to Patrons of the ChargeBlog Patreon, the quarterly update linked above provides plenty of detail on the current state of the market, as well as the current thoughts on the various companies and rulesets in the space.
Spectre Miniatures Show Off Some Zombies

We kick off with a small update from Spectre Miniatures. Two more zombies have been added to the Patreon Zombie folder from May, giving you a zombified priest and an unfortunate fellow still stuck in his body bag. This week also sees work starting on the stack of British infantry coming in June (although we’re still missing the PLA Agitator and a few Ranger figures that were planned to come in May). However, Spectre has also mentioned that this month will see a major announcement coming this month so definitely something to keep an eye on.
Echelon Software Shows Off _NearPresent Terrain System

New news from Echelon Software on NearPresent. We’re still waiting for the Black Powder Red Earth Awbari finale to appear on Amazon (hence my delay in mentioning the news about it), but that hasn’t stopped the team from aggressively rolling into news on the next setting and game, NearPresent. Set in the Indo-Pacific and pitching two near-future forces against each other, it’s important that the two sides (Anchorage and Hankou) have something to fight over. In the lore, the forces are engaged on the surface of maritime platforms, often just after preliminary fires have ripped anything soft off the surface and left behind just the protected emplacements. The terrain packs will include the pieces needed to build these structures yourself, including doors for both human-sized individuals and the CCT bots. These doors (and the firing ports) are all able to be opened and closed by players during gameplay, while the pieces are designed to sit flush with each other (as these structures are highly likely to get shredded during gameplay, ripped open by the heavy firepower of the various weapon systems on the board). There are no estimates on when these structures will be available, but the Black Powder Red Earth Patreon has the latest rulebook if you want to see what’s about to happen.
Flanks March Miniatures Releases 2D CQB Terrain Packs

Flank March Miniatures has been showing off some games of BattleGround HD, and even has a battle report up on his blog over on the Flank March Website (I remember writing those). However, the keen-eyed among you may have spotted some very interesting buildings on the board. Turns out Steffan has been hard at work developing some new tabletop products, 2D CQB Terrain. This is a set of 2D building interiors (drawn by Joe Bilton of Heroic Maps and incredible boards at wargames shows), printed on flexible mousepad material by the team at Deep-Cut Studio and available from Full Metal Miniatures. The first set is only four structures (suitable enough for a small group of buildings at 28mm), but you can easily fit a whole town’s worth in a single bag for games night. This is not a product I’ve seen too much of (except for the terrain tiles for BPRE28), but it does offer a good alternative if you want to have plenty of interesting structures you can fight through but don’t have a space for a Homebase’s worth of Really Useful Boxes full of terrain. If you’re interested in picking a set up, they are available for ยฃ20 on Full Metal Miniatures now.
I actually have a set of these on my desk begging to be looked at, so when I get a second, I’ll take a look at them and work up a post.
Pegasus Miniatures Shows Off Painted Paramilitary And Previews Rulebook Format

After seeing the full collection of figures last week, Pegasus Miniatures this week gave us the first painted figure, complete with a 360-degree preview on the Facebook page. The proof of all models is in the painting (as even printability is no sign of how well a model paints), but since these figures are sculpted by Steffan of Flank March Miniatures, it’s safe to say they’ve come out very nicely. The other update is on the rules, and it sounds like they are in the fun part (also known as the photo-gathering stage). They are also going with a spiral-bound rulebook, a choice that is better for the gamer, as it keeps the rulebook flat on any page without straining the spine. We’ll see more details in the next few weeks as we get closer and closer to the target launch date of the 30th.
Urban Scatter Gaming Previews AutoShop

Urban Scatter Gaming has shown off the first previews of the next release coming from the Patreon – The Garage! As you can see above, it looks like a pretty complete structure with both the large double-door garage and the side office area. And, as with most of USG’s releases, the interior is fully playable, letting you fight through the waiting room and into the back office. Whether it’s criminals breaking the law, Insurgents building VBIEDs or scavengers looking for parts, there are plenty of uses for this setup, making it a real centrepiece for your gaming board.

Of course, you’ll need plenty of details for a working garage, and USG will deliver as always. As you can see above, there are a whole host of parts needed for an auto-shop. More tyres than you can shake a stick at (and plenty of tools for using them), cranes, vehicle lifts and even a pile of broken parts that might just have the thing you need for your clapped-out apocalypse mobile. It’s also amazing that all of these are printed off a Bambu FDM printer rather than resin, showing just what you can do with it.
We’ll stand by for full details of what will be included at each tier when USG updates the Patreon, but it’s looking like another great month.
Black Hills Games Releases SAS 1990s

We have a brand-new release from Black Hills Games, featuring SAS in black kit from the 1990s. Complete with three different head options wearing the S10 gas mask, the set includes 7 different operators, mostly armed with the MP5 with weapon light, but also including a sidearm using figure and another operating as a breacher. This is a nice set, ideal for a whole host of action during the 1990s (such as against most of last month’s Urban Freedom Fighters), and surprisingly easy to paint due to its mostly black look. This set has already been sent out to Patreon backers and is also available on the Black Hills Games Gumroad and MyMiniFactory.
Combat Octopus Previews First Images of 2000’s Russian SF

Combat Octopus is back and is hard at work on the 2000s-era Russian SF set. The first set is going to be more static figures, useful for guards or mixing in with the more aggressive assaulters. As you can see above, the figures are wearing Gorka suits with Redut body armour and Smersh rigs for webbing, with the AK-74 and AKS-74 as two weapon options, while the head is a placeholder. However, there has also been some discussion about tweaking the pack setup to include the massive Vant-VM shield – voting is underway, but it’s looking like one of the static figures will be replaced with a slow-moving shield carrying pointman. We’ll get more details next week, but we should see this pack released this month.
Modern Miniatures Launches Voting Q3 Releases

Modern Miniatures has released the sets for June but is already looking ahead. The overall theme for July, August and September seems to be VEHICLES, VEHICLES, VEHICLES. There is a considerable list of options up on the Modern Miniatures poll, ranging from a collection of crashed helicopters through civilian trucks and military APCs, all the way up to an A10 Thunderbolt (which in 28mm is going to be a chunky boy). I’m looking forward to seeing what comes of this, as I think Modern Miniatures vehicles are well worth investing in because of their ease of printing. The top two from the voting will end up being two months of work, with the final month being the sculptor’s choice. Stand by for updates on what we’ll see!
Turnbase Miniatures Releases CBRN Squad

Finally, Turnbase Miniatures has released the Tier 2 squad to May Patrons. This 5-person set is a pretty high-end set of operators in full CBRN kit, with an interesting mix of weapons – suppressed Scorpion Evo 3, KS7 shotgun, APC Carbine and a 40mm grenade launcher. The figures should be sent out to Patrons already and are also available on MyMiniFactory now.

If you want to support my work on gathering the news together, my Patreon is the best way to keep things going. With a minimal cost of ยฃ1 a month, every little helps to keep the news spigot flowing and to let me cover more of the suppliers, rules writers and inspirational creatives out there.
Of course, if you are a REAL news fan, there is a higher tier for the News Fan. For ยฃ5 a month (or ยฃ1.25ish a post), you can guarantee youโll get your weekly dose of news updates and keep me going.
If you really want to help keep this site running, you can join the Special Projects and Logistics Group for ยฃ7.50 a month. This gives you access to a whole host of additional blog content – more in-depth analysis on the news, SPOT-REPs to act as a guide to the industry, updates on various projects I’m personally working on (such as the ChargeReal or Project Elements) or even more unannounced items coming soon. For less than ยฃ2 a week, this tier will make sure you see everything I get up to on the blog, perfect for someone wanting a finger on the pulse of the Ultramodern niche.
