Adventures in Wargaming

Half of June is over, the summer is basically here and there is a pile of new updates from Ultramodern Wargaming. Read on for all the latest in previews, releases and more!
Seeing as I spent most of the month writing rules, writing articles or 3d printing things, I realised I should probably actually finish painting something before the month ends. My eyes settled on the Combat Octopus KSK figures I had on my desk which I assembled back in December and had been waiting for their chance to step up to the plate. And here they are done – I went for the black kit look (rather than the usual camo) to make them look like an elite special forces. Eshin grey as the base colour, black contrast over the top…
February 6th 2022 – as the hordes descend on York Racecourse for Vapanartak, for many the first wargames show of the year, a few streets over in the local scout hut, a different horde was appearing. From North, South and even the wrong side of the Pennines, a group of friends assembled… Surprise, it’s time for more Big Chain of Command! The Dastardly Regular Opponent decided that we would be taking a trip to North Africa, thanks to his collection of adobe buildings and hessian sack matting. By pooling forces with the Creative Regular Opponent, they managed to assemble three…
Replace the engine with one that gets reasonable fuel mileage. Add a fume extractor so the main gun doesn’t choke the crew. Redo the wiring loops so they don’t burn as easily. Mount a new gunsight, commander vision system and the interior screens so you can actually see what’s going on outside. Attach the antennas and trackers needed for the modern army. Add a pylon mounted camera to let you spot the enemy and do your job while hull down. Our brothers and sisters in the Kingdom might mock us for using tanks older than most of their crews, but…
Surprise, I’ve been writing for other people again. A friend of mine, Bill, is the editor for Airsoft Action and a keen wargamer. In the latest issue, he wrote up a piece on Black Powder Red Earth 28mm, extolling the virtues to the 6mm Soldiers crowd (no, not the tiny scale). He also asked if he could include some segments of my BPRE 28mm impressions to help set the scene, as well as getting closing thoughts on how Airsoft and Wargaming can cross over. That issue is now out and can be read either in the embed above or at…
I am a keen fan of the CVR(T) family of vehicles, tiny armoured fighting vehicles which the British have been using since the 1970s and are still (with some tweaks and upgrades) in service with the British Army today. Maybe its from having a diecast one as a toy as a child or maybe the fact it looks like a sports car of the tank world. Either way, getting some in 28mm was one of my goals. After taking a look at Guaro3d (and doing some test prints), I eventually got my hands on the Bobmack3d BAOR kickstarter. As well…
One downside of not really going to wargames clubs anymore is that I can no longer rely on their vast collections of terrain. I’ve slowly been building up my own stockpile of things in addition to the literal pile of buildings I have, adding some lichen, scatter and trees to the boxes to add to the game. Today I just received a set of cypress trees and some more conifers. These trees are from Ronny8664 on eBay and I really recommend them. They are nice and dense with the flock on them and structurally solid, so little fear of them…
Thanks to the Dastardly Regular Opponent, I got a Rubicon M5A1 kit. Seeing as my Churchill Tank platoon may need some recce boys to watch up ahead, I immediately jumped in to getting it built up! As you might expect from Rubicon, it’s a pretty fantastic kit. That company has nailed down how to make kits for wargaming – plastic kits that look good but also go together incredibly quickly and with some clever tweak to make assembly pretty painless. As someone who assembled four Churchills from Warlord, having a kit that has single piece tracks is literally perfection. I…
Yesterday was Vapa in York, the first one since 2020. It was good to see the show return – it’s one of the first of the year and among my favourites, a place to catch-up and see people or find out the new release gossip. This year it seemed to be running at 75%, with a few notable people missing (such as the old standby Empress) and a lot more space to move around. I’ll admit, the extra space was pretty great, with less of a snarl just trying to get around the show. As you can see I came…
