Adventures in Wargaming

The week has ticked over, so it’s time to cover all the latest in the world of Ultramodern Wargaming. New releases from Spectre, previews from Combat Octopus and many others, and even a sign of life from Haywire. Read on for more!
Following up on Combat Octopus’s 2nd VBSS release, I was approached by Paul (Paulidus on the Ultramodern Discord) messaged me about the set of VBSS figures he had commissioned from Spectre via their Director tier on Patreon. Paul has a keen interest in the 1980s/1990s tactical chic (and will not stop sending me the cool stuff he finds, trying to corrupt me as well) and so when the VBSS guys failed to reach the interest needed from the Combat Octopus Patreon, he decided to commission this team of four guys. This team of four is all armed with MP5s as…
The Lazy Forger, 6mm evangelist and man responsible for generating impulsive print sessions on my printers most frequently, grabbed me to show off some 6mm buildings (releasing today) that are picture-perfect for some Ultramodern wargaming.. And this time, we’re going into the concrete and sheet metal jungles of the favelas. In the past, we have seen some pretty cool shanty town buildings from Lazy Forger but these have been simple ramshackle setups, huts with elements added. This release however feels much more urban and built up, nestling close to the city. In total, the range includes 12 brick and concrete…
Combat Octopus has just released the latest monthly update to all his Patreon backers. This is the second part of the VBSS release we had the first part of back in February and while that initial release focused on the main assaulters, this pack adds some more unique firepower. Containing both M14s with red dots and pump action 870 shotguns, these guys are here to add some flair to your force. For Sergeant, the additional options mentioned on the chart above is adding in some MP5SDs to go for some more sneaky shenanigans (which should be added to the stash…
In a development that keeps the News Stand full, Spectre has shown off some new figures coming later this month as a metal release via the preview channel on their Discord. As previously mentioned, this release is going to be a SWAT team, based on a discussion between Spectre and a Swat Officer in central Texas. The seven-man pack has two specialists in addition to the four assaulters – a shield operator to take point and a marksman with a HK 417 and all the fun attachments. There is an excellent level of detail to the figures, with the usual…
Just announced via their newsletter email, the Enemy Spotted Studios team have announced a new variant of the INCOUNTRY(or INX) ruleset, titled INCOUNTRY:RECON. From reading through the newsletter (available here), this is a matched play version of the original INCOUNTRY rules, designed to be quick to pick up and play while focusing on smaller battles. While INCOUNTRY was focused on moving your teams around each activation, RECON will take a set of rules tweaks referred to as “INCOUNTRY CQB” (which dropped the focus to the individual operator) and update and improve them for a full release. Things like injury rules…
So there I was, still recovering from my game of What a Nerf Herder against my Dastardly Regular Opponent on the bank holiday weekend when I received… a message. Turns out his Friday night had opened up and there was a new gaming slot. Of course, I was quick to jump in and say yes, lets roll some dice and play some games. The question was, what to play. We could have jumped into the next game of the What a Nerf Herder campaign, but I’m wanting to get a few other figures set up and ready to go before…
It’s a new month, and like clockwork on the first day, I get an update from MyMiniFactory telling me that Head Goon from Enemy Spotted Studios has deployed a new release into my collection. These Ghost operators, continuing Operator Spring that the Tribe is running, are a pretty interesting set of figures. They have a collection of some really gucci looking guns, such as AR-15s with Hera Arms CQR furniture and a 9mm AR for close-range clearing while a scoped SCAR-H and a tactical-looking bolt action rifle give you your standoff capability. In addition, there is also a separately modelled…
From the cadence of these posts, you might guess that Spectre is having a little bit of a resurgence at the moment. With the return of the lead sculptor fresh off work on some of Necormunda’s latest releases and the announcement of a new Version 3 of the rules, they have managed to regain some element of the momentum they lost over the last year. Following on from last week’s releases, we have been given some more insight into the goings-on behind the scenes. First up, let’s talk about the open wound that is the Spectre Patreon. There is going…
