Adventures in Wargaming

The week has ticked over, so it’s time to cover all the latest in the world of Ultramodern Wargaming. New releases from Spectre, previews from Combat Octopus and many others, and even a sign of life from Haywire. Read on for more!
Last year, the game that made me sort out a load of 6mm terrain was Adeptus Titanticus. This year? Well, it’s the classic game, the one that’s been going for over 40 years in various forms: BattleTech. After our first game back in January, the Regular Opponents have decided to go all in on it. I received a box of them for my birthday and, after getting them painted earlier last week, we were all definitely feeling a touch excited about getting some mechs clashing on the board. With Friday being a Bank Holiday in the UK, we decided it…
Last Year, I printed out some tiny 6mm buildings from Lazy Forger in preparation for a game featuring tiny mechs. A year later, the Regular Opponents and I planned out a game featuring tiny mechs. So of course, I had to print more buildings. And not just because Lazy Forger has been tempting me with more and more items from his incredible range as he’s been releasing them. Disclosure time! – I’m on Lazy Forger’s test list meaning I receive models for free to help with development as well as providing feedback to him. He also is using this to…
So mere moments after writing my Letter from the Hobby Desk, I looked down and realised that I had another project sitting literally by my feet in a box. Back in January, the Dastardly Regular Opponent decided that I didn’t have enough tiny robots in my life and got me this set for my Birthday. I was a little distracted for a month or so, meaning this box had to go in my stockpile of unopened boxes. But, I am a slightly practical man. And I know that I could easily hammer out a lance of Mechs in one evening…
The biggest problem when running a wargaming blog is deciding the pace and tempo of blog posts you want to do. Okay, that’s a lie – the biggest problem when running a wargaming blog is knowing when not to add new projects to the pile. But that’s impossible to fix so I’m going to focus on the tempo thing. For some people, their rhythm of posting is hammering out lots of small posts, often with one picture and a load of text – I love Jim’s Wargames Workbench for this very fact as you get to see how projects develop…
I’ve previously mentioned that, as part of my Long War series against the tactics of the Dastardly Regular Opponent, we would shortly begin a Pint Size Campaign-inspired set of missions pitting our tactical minds against each other in the deserts of North Africa. After some research, and agreeing to play some games with the Germans on the offensive rather than sitting back with the MGs, the DRO decided upon Torbruk, pitting the Germans on the offensive against British and Commonwealth positions. With initial planning for the campaign being done by the DRO channelling some of his day job (hitting the…
Listen, you may not know this, but I have a thing about Operation Market Garden in WW2. Probably because the first game I actually tried to sit down and learn to play (rather than simply slapping the buttons to see if it worked) was Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far. Not the best choice for a 5 or 6 year old but technically it counts as history and honestly my Dad was better equipped to actually win missions. Even to this day, specific voice lines from that game echoes in both my head and his. This, of course, means that…
Well, this has been a busy weekend. You readers will only be interested in the first half (unless for some reason you want to know about Mother’s Day celebrations which is, bad news, not the topic of this blog). Instead, lets talk about some wargaming things! On Friday, I finished work early and drove over to York. For a change, it was not for my usual reason (go play the Dastardly Regular Opponent) but instead to go meet the team behind Flytrap Factory who are in the process of touring around the UK on holiday. If you don’t know Flytrap,…
So, how is everyone doing? Having a good week? Enjoyed last week’s return to blogging/wargaming talk? I finished off last week with some comments that I am in the process of writing up a blog post about our industry favourite Spectre and their current fortunes. This apparently warranted an email and later that evening I received an email from the company asking about my intentions while writing about them. Last weekend I was house painting, so I took a couple of days before responding back with an answer, explaining the aim of the post and offering to work out a…
